Innovative treatment targeting gangliosides aimed at blocking the formation of neurotoxic alpha-synuclein oligomers in Parkinson's disease

Nouara Yahi et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a major neurodegenerative disorder that requires a treatment targeting the root cause of the disease. This article highlights the role of lipid rafts in forming alpha-synuclein pore-like oligomers, which trigger a cascade of neurotoxic events, proposing blocking alpha-synuclein-ganglioside interactions as a potential therapeutic avenue for PD.

Elucidation of interactions regulating conformational stability and dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 S-protein

Takaharu Mori et al.

Summary: This study conducted molecular dynamics simulations on glycosylated S-proteins to investigate conformational stability and transition mechanisms. Key determinants of stability in each form were found to be N-glycans and interacting residues, while electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds drove the conformational transitions.

Antiglycolipid antibodies in Guillain-Barre and Fisher syndromes: discovery, current status and future perspective

Susumu Kusunoki et al.

Summary: Guillain-Barre syndrome and Fisher syndrome are acute autoimmune neuropathies often triggered by infection, with antiglycolipid antibody titres elevated in acute-phase patients, particularly for diagnosis in FS. These antibodies are mainly found in acute motor axonal neuropathy GBS and FS, suggesting the need for further research and standardisation in antibody detection methods.

β-Glucosylation of cholesterol reduces sterol-sphingomyelin interactions

Shinya Hanashima et al.

Summary: The study showed that glucosylation reduces the effect of cholesterol on the ordering of sphingomyelin chains, leading to decreased interactions between cholesterol and sphingomyelin, which in turn affects the stability of specific locations in biological membranes.

Metal Complex Lipids for Fluid-Fluid Phase Separation in Coassembled Phospholipid Membranes

Ryo Ohtani et al.

Summary: A fluid-fluid phase separation was demonstrated in DMPC membranes using a metal complex lipid [Mn(L1)], with two separated domains formed and lower phase transition temperatures observed. Variable temperature fluorescent microscopy showed visible phase separations in DMPC/1 hybrids remained up to a temperature exceeding the T-c of DMPC, indicating potential applications for controlling lipid distributions in fluid membranes.

Interplay of Trans- and Cis-Interactions of Glycolipids in Membrane Adhesion

Batuhan Kav et al.

Summary: This study investigates the trans- and cis-interactions of glycolipids through molecular dynamics simulations and their relationship with the average separations of membranes obtained from neutron scattering experiments. The findings suggest that the interactions between glycolipids in the same membrane leaflet strengthen the interactions between glycolipids in apposing leaflets. The simulations also indicate the importance of membrane shape fluctuations in glycolipid trans-binding.

Summary: Carbohydrates in glycoproteins play a crucial role in the selective interaction and regulation of cellular processes, often inducing allosteric changes in host proteins. Recent advances in technologies like NMR spectroscopy have made it possible to study intact glycoproteins and uncover multiple new functional mechanisms hidden within the sugar code.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of cellular senescence on membrane properties through different imaging techniques. The research found that as cells undergo senescence, there is an increase in ceramide-rich lipid rafts in the membrane, highlighting the importance of membrane properties in cellular senescence.
