Root-derived inputs are major contributors to soil carbon in temperate forests, but vary by mycorrhizal type

Adrienne B. Keller et al.

Summary: In the study of six Eastern U.S. forests, it was found that root-derived carbon accumulation was 54% greater in arbuscular mycorrhizal trees compared to ectomycorrhizal trees; as a result, nearly twice as much root-derived carbon was present in putatively slow-cycling mineral-associated pools in arbuscular mycorrhizal trees compared to ectomycorrhizal trees. The study suggests that variations in root-derived soil carbon accumulation due to tree mycorrhizal dominance may play a key role in controlling soil carbon dynamics in forests.

A starting guide to root ecology: strengthening ecological concepts and standardising root classification, sampling, processing and trait measurements

Gregoire T. Freschet et al.

Summary: This handbook aims to improve the standardisation of root trait comparisons and the integration of information across studies by providing controlled vocabularies and methods. It serves as a starting point for students and scientists interested in below-ground ecosystems, and also for experts looking to broaden their understanding of root ecology. The guide also emphasizes the importance of considering ecological context when studying root traits and aims to break down barriers between different subdisciplines of root ecology.

Fine-root functional trait responses to experimental warming: a global meta-analysis

Jinsong Wang et al.

Summary: The research found that warming has significant effects on the functional traits of absorptive plant roots, with fine-root biomass, production, respiration, and nitrogen concentration increasing with warming, while root carbon : nitrogen ratio and nonstructural carbohydrates decreasing. In short-term experiments, the effect of warming on fine-root biomass weakens with increasing warming magnitude, and the positive effect of warming on fine-root biomass is most pronounced in deeper soil horizons and colder, drier regions.

No effect of long-term soil warming on diffusive soil inorganic and organic nitrogen fluxes in a temperate forest soil

Summary: The study found that climate warming does not affect nitrogen cycling in forest soils, and the proportion of amino acids in the total diffusive N flux is low.

High-resolution minirhizotrons advance our understanding of root-fungal dynamics in an experimentally warmed peatland

Camille E. Defrenne et al.

Summary: This study utilized high-resolution minirhizotron technology in a forested bog to investigate the dynamics of plant fine roots and fungal mycelium, revealing that ericaceous shrub roots and ectomycorrhizal fungal rhizomorphs were more abundant in warmer and drier peat, while tree fine roots, ectomycorrhizas, and dark-colored fungal hyphae were more prevalent in colder, wetter peat. The warmer end of the experimental temperature gradient extended the belowground active season for both plant roots and fungi by 62 days, impacting belowground carbon, water, and nutrient fluxes.
