Spatial and Temporal Variability of Oceanic Oxygen Changes and Underlying Trends

Lothar Stramma et al.

Summary: The recent analysis of observed oxygen changes reveals a 2% decline in marine oxygen over the past 50 years, with variations in different regions and time scales linked to various drivers. These drivers include solubility, stratification, source water changes, and circulation patterns, making it challenging to accurately determine the impact of each driver on oxygen levels. Efforts to better understand these complex interactions will improve future verification of numerical models for ocean oxygen levels.

Microbial Ecology of Oxygen Minimum Zones Amidst Ocean Deoxygenation

Andrew M. Long et al.

Summary: Oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) have significant effects on marine microbial ecology and biogeochemical processes, especially under low oxygen conditions. Microorganisms in OMZs play important roles in carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycling, with involvement of viruses and protists. Additionally, the different roles of microbial communities in oxic and anoxic environments are noteworthy for understanding microbial responses to deoxygenation.

Summary: GLODAPv2.2021 is an updated version of the Global Ocean Data Analysis Project, incorporating data from 43 new cruises, extending data coverage until 2020, and performing quality control to ensure accuracy. The adjustments aim to remove biases from errors related to measurement, calibration, and data handling practices while maintaining known trends in the evaluated variables.
