Quantification of Electric Fields in Fast Breakdown During Lightning Initiation From VHF-UHF Power Spectra

Yunjiao Pu et al.

Summary: This study applies a new remote sensing approach to indirectly probe the electric fields in the discharge region of fast breakdown processes during lightning initiation. The results show a localized field enhancement in the region dominating the emission of VHF-UHF, with a field strength more than 7 times higher than the expected pre-discharge background field. This has important implications for the dynamics of lightning streamers and their impact on the immediate environment, as well as constraining the geometry of the breakdown structure.

LOFAR Observations of Lightning Initial Breakdown Pulses

Ningyu Y. Liu et al.

Summary: This paper reports an observational study of lightning initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) using low-frequency array radio telescope and a broadband magnetic field sensor. The study reveals that the spatiotemporal evolution of the electrical breakdown causing an IBP is complex. It is found that bursts of very high frequency (VHF) electromagnetic radiation occur spatially and temporally separated in a volume on the order of 100(3) m(3), coincident with brief magnetic field pulses, indicating sudden changes in the location of the active breakdown region. Recurrent breakdown activity is observed, particularly at the location of VHF bursts. The study suggests that IBPs are likely generated through the involvement of multiple space stems/leaders and connections between them.

Interferometric imaging of intensely radiating negative leaders

O. Scholten et al.

Summary: A new propagation mode for negative leaders in lightning was observed, emitting significantly more VHF and broadband radiation compared to normal negative leaders. Measurements with the LOFAR radio telescope showed an ionization front with a diameter over 500 meters during an intensely radiating negative leader, indicating a dense charge pocket.

Distinguishing features of high altitude negative leaders as observed with LOFAR

O. Scholten et al.

Summary: High resolution observations using the LOFAR radio telescope reveal that negative leaders at high altitudes exhibit distinct characteristics compared to those at lower altitudes, such as noticeable steps, shorter stepping times, longer filamentary structures, and faster propagation velocities. Additionally, both high altitude and lower altitude leaders emit VHF radiation and exhibit corona-flash like bursts on smaller scales.

Lightning Initiation From Fast Negative Breakdown is Led by Positive Polarity Dominated Streamers

Anjing Huang et al.

Summary: Evidence shows that positive polarity dominated streamers precede fast negative breakdowns and both positive and negative polarity streamers develop simultaneously during lightning initiation. Observations indicate that positive streamers continuously propagate during strong negative breakdowns, even when negative streamers dominate the overall emissions. These findings provide new insight into the structure and dynamics of fast breakdowns during lightning initiation.

Electrostatic Conditions That Produce Fast Breakdown in Thunderstorms

Alex Attanasio et al.

Summary: Fast breakdown (FB) is a process composed of high-velocity streamers observed to precede lightning leader formation and play a critical role in lightning initiation. An improved version of the Griffiths and Phelps model is used alongside supervised machine learning techniques to probe the required electric fields and potentials inside thunderstorms to produce FB and NBEs, showing that the needed electrostatic conditions for +FB and -FB at different altitudes are about the same, each requiring about 100 MV potential difference to propagate 500 m. Additionally, the model illustrates how electric field enhancement ahead of propagating FB can initiate rebounding FB of the opposite polarity.
