GNSS total variometric approach: first demonstration of a tool for real-time tsunami genesis estimation

Michela Ravanelli et al.

Summary: The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is utilized in seismology to study ground displacements and monitor ionospheric total electron content (TEC) perturbations following earthquakes. By combining these observations using the Total Variometric Approach (TVA), a real-time method is developed to include GNSS data in future warning systems and tsunami genesis estimation. The TVA demonstrates a coherent relationship between earthquake ground shaking and TEC perturbations, highlighting a stronger kinetic energy release in the north of the epicenter. The high spatial resolution of ionospheric TEC measurements matches with the extent of the seismic source, opening new perspectives for real-time warning systems for tsunami genesis estimation.
