Aerosol agitation: Quantifying the hydrodynamic stressors on particulates encapsulated in small droplets

Oliver McRae et al.

Summary: Lower respiratory tract infections can originate from various aerosol sources, and the survival of pathogens during aerosolization is crucial. Pinch-off processes occurring during aerosolization may accelerate fluid into droplets, potentially damaging biological life. This study calculates the probability of particulates being exposed to hydrodynamic stressors during droplet generation, suggesting aerosol agitation as a potential factor in pathogen transmission.

Organosulfates from Dark Aqueous Reactions of Isoprene-Derived Epoxydiols Under Cloud and Fog Conditions: Kinetics, Mechanism, and Effect of Reaction Environment on Regioselectivity of Sulfate Addition

Sarah S. Petters et al.

Summary: This study investigated the rates, product branching ratios, and stereochemistry of organosulfates from reactions of dilute IEPDX under a range of sulfate concentrations and pH values. It was found that the regiochemistry and stereochemistry of products were affected by pH, with tertiary methyltetrol sulfate promoted by increasing solution acidity. The reaction rate constants under cloud-relevant conditions were significantly lower than those reported for aerosol-relevant conditions due to different solution activities.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of Laplace pressure on chemical processes in atmospheric ultrafine particles, finding that high pressure significantly slows down reaction product formation. These results suggest that high pressure is a key factor influencing the chemical processes governing atmospheric aerosol growth and evolution.

Direct Quantification of Droplet Activation of Ambient Black Carbon Under Water Supersaturation

Dawei Hu et al.

Summary: The droplet activation of ambient BC-containing particles is determined by coated size and modulated by the organic content of coatings. An activation diameter of 144 +/- 21 nm was observed for urban BC-containing particles (BCc) under SS = 0.2%, with a 60% +/- 10% number fraction of BCc being activated to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). While K0hler theory CCN predictions accurately capture the total aerosol population, the CCN activation of BCc particles is overpredicted by 27%-71%.

Summary: Residential biomass combustion is a significant source of aerosol particles that impact climate and human health on global and regional scales. This study investigated cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) properties emitted from biomass burning in sub-Saharan east Africa, finding that particle number size distributions were dominated by an ultrafine mode with CCN activity decreasing as particle size increased.

Toward closure between predicted and observed particle viscosity over a wide range of temperatures and relative humidity

Sabin Kasparoglu et al.

Summary: This study compares predicted and observed viscosities of sucrose and citric acid, using literature data on viscosity and glass transition temperature as a function of water content to constrain fragility parameterization. Measurements of sub-100 nm particle viscosities using the dimer relaxation method extend the available data to -28 degrees C. Predicted relationships align well with observations at room temperature and temperatures warmer than -28 degrees C, but discrepancies are observed at colder temperatures for sucrose particles. Simulations suggest that these deviations may be due to kinetic limitations associated with water uptake at dimer relaxation timescales. Equilibrium phase-state diagrams for sucrose and citric acid have been updated based on available information.
