Evaluating the Diurnal and Semidiurnal Cycle of Precipitation in CMIP6 Models Using Satellite- and Ground-Based Observations

Shuaiqi Tang et al.

Summary: The evaluation of the diurnal and semidiurnal cycle of precipitation simulated by CMIP6 models showed some biases compared to satellite products, but improvements in delaying afternoon precipitation over land compared to CMIP5 models. Additionally, encouraging consistency was found between satellite- and ground-based precipitation measurements, providing confidence in their use in evaluating the precipitation cycle in climate models.

Evaluation of extreme sub-daily precipitation in high-resolution global climate model simulations

Michael Wehner et al.

Summary: The study found that extreme precipitation increases with higher horizontal resolution in climate models, but the model skill metrics do not significantly change. There is little evidence to suggest that simulated extreme winter or summer storm processes significantly improve with increased resolution, as the identified model performance changes are consistent with expectations based on scale dependence arguments. The implications of these scale-dependent limitations on the interpretation of simulated extreme precipitation are also discussed.

Evaluation of the Causes of Wet-Season Dry Biases Over Amazonia in CAM5

Hsi-Yen Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the causes of low precipitation bias in the Amazonia region using CAM5 model. It found that the model fails to effectively simulate nighttime deep convection, leading to frequent but weaker rainfall peaks during the wet season. Additionally, the model's inability to transport moisture effectively from the boundary layer to the free atmosphere also contributes to weaker deep convection events.

Effects of coupling a stochastic convective parameterization with the Zhang-McFarlane scheme on precipitation simulation in the DOE E3SMv1.0 atmosphere model

Yong Wang et al.

Summary: The implementation of stochastic deep convection parameterization in the E3SM Atmosphere Model improves the simulation of precipitation by addressing the issue of too much light rain and too little heavy rain. This shift towards heavier rain in the total precipitation amount is achieved by less frequent convection and enhanced intense large-scale and convective precipitation, leading to better agreement with observations in terms of synoptic and intraseasonal variabilities.
