Exploring probabilistic seismic risk assessment accounting for seismicity clustering and damage accumulation: Part I. Hazard analysis

Athanasios N. Papadopoulos et al.

Summary: Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) is a key tool for assessing earthquake risk, recent seismic events have highlighted potential flaws in traditional models, necessitating a reevaluation and improvement.

Cost-benefit analyses to assess the potential of Operational Earthquake Forecasting prior to a mainshock in Europe

John Douglas et al.

Summary: Operational Earthquake Forecasting (OEF) has the potential to reduce human losses by triggering actions, but cost-benefit considerations need to be carefully weighed when taking potential actions in periods of increased seismic hazard before a mainshock. Low-cost actions triggered by OEF are cost-beneficial for areas of moderate to high seismicity in the Mediterranean region, while actions triggered by OEF in northern areas of Europe may not be cost-beneficial unless significant increases in seismicity are observed or very low-cost actions are possible.

A Ground-Motion Prediction Model for Shallow Crustal Earthquakes in Greece

Summary: A ground-motion prediction model (GMPM) was derived using strong-motion data recorded in Greece, with important attributes for hazard applications. The Greek data showed substantial differences from the global model, potentially due to regional characteristics or soil-structure interaction.

A decision-making approach for operational earthquake forecasting

Alireza Azarbakht et al.

Summary: The study presents a hybrid decision-making framework based on multiple criteria and cost-benefit analysis to help make decisions on earthquake risk mitigation measures. Demonstrated through three hypothetical case studies in high seismicity areas, the approach shows flexibility in handling new problems and sensitivity to the benefits of mitigation actions during periods of increased seismic hazard.
