Pressure, temperature and lithological dependence of seismic and magnetic susceptibility anisotropy in amphibolites and gneisses from the central Scandinavian Caledonides

Mohsen Bazargan et al.

Summary: This study presents laboratory measurements of elastic wave velocities and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) for samples from deep drilling investigation, showing a significant impact of pressure on seismic anisotropy and an increase in mean wave speed values with increasing pressure. Biotite gneiss and amphibolite exhibit higher anisotropy compared to felsic gneisses in terms of P and S wave anisotropy.

Effect of interlayer cations on montmorillonite swelling: Comparison between molecular dynamic simulations and experiments

Kenji Yotsuji et al.

Summary: This study investigated the crystalline swelling behavior of montmorillonite with different interlayer cations using molecular dynamics simulations and experimental measurements. Results showed that hydration free energy of interlayer cations and their coordination mode play a crucial role in the swelling behavior. The preference of outer- or inner-sphere complex of interlayer cations and the distribution of cations also significantly impact the swelling behavior.

Ripplocations in layered materials: Sublinear scaling and basal climb

James G. McHugh et al.

Summary: In this study, basal dislocations and ripplocations in layered materials were investigated using analytical and computational techniques. It was found that the energetic and structural scaling factors of surface ripplocations are closely related to the physics of a classical carpet ruck. Simulations showed that the lowest-energy structure of dislocation pileups in layered materials is the ripplocation, while large dislocation pileups in bulk graphite exhibited multilayer delamination, curvature, and voids, providing a concise explanation for the large volumetric expansion seen in irradiated graphite.
