Mesozoic building of the Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar (NW China) revealed by low-temperature thermochronology

Zhiyuan He et al.

Summary: The Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar regions underwent moderate to rapid basement cooling during the Cretaceous, likely due to far-field effects of accretion and collision along the south Eurasia margin. The East Junggar experienced cooling events from the late Permian to Early Jurassic, possibly related to post-orogenic transpression along major faults and distal effects of the Qiangtang-Eurasia collision. Combined with existing evidence, it is suggested that there was no significant exhumation in the Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar during the Cenozoic.

Structural and kinematic evolution of strike-slip shear zones around and in the Central Tianshan: Insights for eastward tectonic wedging in the southwest Central Asian Orogenic Belt

Zhiyuan He et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the Xiaergou and Wulasitai shear zones in the southwestern Central Asian Orogenic Belt experienced dextral and sinistral shearing during the Late Paleozoic. The formation of these shear zones is closely related to the eastward tectonic wedging and relative rotations between continental blocks in the Central Tianshan region.

Long-term topographic evolution of the Central Tianshan (NW China) constrained by low-temperature thermochronology

Zhiyuan He et al.

Summary: This study provides insights into the evolution of intra-continental deformation in the Chinese Central Tianshan region from the Mesozoic to the present, revealing regional slow to moderate cooling during most of the Mesozoic and the significant role of Cenozoic uplift and erosion in shaping the present-day topography. The findings suggest that the Chinese Central Tianshan did not undergo intensive relief building during its long-term Mesozoic evolution, and that regional brittle faults may have played a key role in influencing intra-continental deformation processes.
