Seismic stratigraphy and sedimentology of a Miocene carbonate platform in Luconia, South China Sea

Adelya Makhankova et al.

Summary: The study explores the evolution of isolated carbonate buildups in the Middle Miocene in Central Luconia in the southern South China Sea. It shows the different stages of development of the buildups and how they are influenced by tectonics, eustatic fluctuations, and other factors. The research highlights the complex interactions between endogenic and exogenic processes that shape the reefal evolution and architecture of the buildups.

Development of the Miocene Guangle Carbonate Platform in the South China Sea: Architecture and Controlling Factors

Yang Zhen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of the Miocene Guangle carbonate platform of the northwestern South China Sea margin, and identifies tectonics and terrigenous input as the main controlling factors on its development. The main evolution stages of the Guangle carbonate platform are determined to be the Early Miocene and Middle Miocene periods.

Cenozoic Evolution of the Sulu Sea Arc-Basin System: An Overview

Chun-Kit Lai et al.

Summary: The Cenozoic Sulu Sea arc-basin system has experienced multiple major magmatic phases and geological events, including tectonic changes, basin opening, subduction processes, and magmatic activities in different geological periods. The convergence between the Palawan Continental Terrane and northern Borneo-SW Philippines triggered regional uplift and subduction processes, leading to the formation of various geological features and volcanic activities.

New zircon radiometric U-Pb ages and Lu-Hf isotopic data from the ultramafic-mafic sequences of Ranau and Telupid (Sabah, eastern Malaysia): Time to reconsider the geological evolution of Southeast Asia?

Basilios Tsikouras et al.

Summary: New U-Pb geochronology findings from Sabah, Malaysia suggest that mafic-ultramafic rocks in the region were not ophiolitic and did not form during the Jurassic-Cretaceous period, as previously believed, but rather originated from a magmatic event in the Miocene. These rocks show evidence of both mantle-derived and crustal components, with the involvement of a crustal component possibly linked to the evolving Miocene oceanic basin in the area.

Clumped isotope geochemistry of island carbonates in the South China Sea: Implications for early diagenesis and dolomitization

Yangrui Guo et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the Delta(47) values of island carbonates from the Meiji Reef in the South China Sea to constrain the diagenetic environment, finding that most diagenetic alteration likely occurred at water depths around 200 meters below sea level at temperatures between 15 and 28 degrees Celsius. The fluids involved in the formation of diagenetic calcites and dolomites have similar delta O-18 values to modern seawater.

The effect of diagenesis on rare earth element geochemistry of the Quaternary carbonates at an isolated coral atoll in the South China Sea

Yun Luo et al.

Summary: The redox state of ancient seawater is crucial for understanding the variations in atmospheric and oceanic conditions in the geological past. Rare earth elements + Y (REY) in marine carbonates are considered a potential proxy for reconstructing paleoredox conditions. This study confirms the conservative behavior of REY in reefal carbonates during various diagenetic transformations under conditions of low terrigenous contaminations.
