The evaluation of rock brittleness and its application: a review study

Yingjie Xia et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the relationship between rock brittleness and mechanical properties, such as the post-peak stress drop coefficient in the stress-strain curve. It summarizes the existing estimation methods for rock brittleness index and reviews its applications in fields such as hydraulic fracturing, coal mines, and tunnels.

Pore-throat structure characteristics of tight reservoirs of the Middle Permian Lucaogou formation in the Jimsar Sag, Junggar Basin, northwest China

Xiaojun Wang et al.

Summary: The dolomite content in the Lucaogou tight reservoir is positively correlated with porosity and permeability, suggesting that dolomite has a significant impact on reservoir quality. Sandy dolarenite and dolomitic siltstone with higher dolomite content have larger pores and throat radii, higher pore-throat network connection ratio, higher permeability, and better oiliness. Therefore, the quality of the Lucaogou tight reservoir is primarily controlled by the dolomite content.

Experimental Study on Fracture Propagation Mechanism of Shale Oil Reservoir of Lucaogou Formation in Jimusar

Jianmin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fracture propagation mechanism in vertically heterogeneous shale oil reservoirs in the Lucaogou Formation of the Junggar Basin, China. The research reveals that fractures tend to penetrate bedding planes in siltstone layers but are constrained in mudstone layers. Increasing the viscosity of the fracturing fluid improves the stimulation effects in the shale oil reservoir.

Investigation on the Effect of Atmosphere on the Pyrolysis Behavior and Oil Quality of Jimusar Oil Shale

Zhiqin Kang et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different atmospheres (H2O, CO2, and N-2) on the pyrolysis behavior of Jimusar oil shale. The results showed that the presence of H2O and CO2 improved the pyrolysis reactivity and oil yield of the shale, with H2O having a better effect. Additionally, H2O and CO2 atmospheres promoted the formation of a well-developed pore structure, facilitating mass and heat transfer during pyrolysis.

Rock brittleness indices and their applications to different fields of rock engineering: A review

Fanzhen Meng et al.

Summary: The research reviewed various definitions of rock brittleness and identified 80 brittleness indices, showing a lack of standardization in the measurement methods. It was found that different field-specific indices are not directly applicable to others, and some empirically-obtained indices may not truly reflect rock brittleness.

The effect of fracture growth rate on fracture process zone development in quasi-brittle rock

Lei Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of fracture growth rate on the length and shape of the fracture process zone (FPZ). The results showed that FPZ characteristics varied in different stages of fracture growth, with higher fracture propagation rates leading to longer FPZ lengths.

Revisiting Controls on Shale Oil Accumulation in Saline Lacustrine Basins: The Permian Lucaogou Formation Mixed Rocks, Junggar Basin

Chenjia Zhang et al.

Summary: Fine-grained mixed rocks in saline lacustrine basins are important targets for shale oil exploration. The shale oil potential is not solely controlled by hydrocarbon generation potential, but also by the presence of micro-nanoscale pores. Different mixing processes between lithofacies influence the accumulation of shale oil, with facies mixing in transitional zones being the most productive.

1D mechanical earth modeling in the Permian Lucaogou Shale of the Santanghu Basin, Northwest China, from a complete set of laboratory data

Bo Liu et al.

Summary: Understanding the properties of unconventional shale plays is crucial for successful field operations. A study on core plugs from the Middle Permian Lucaogou Formation revealed the samples are in the oil window and exhibit brittle behavior. Analysis established a correlation between ultrasonic and static geomechanical parameters, identifying feldspar and calcite as minerals positively affecting mechanical properties.

Identification of Oil Produced from Shale and Tight Reservoirs in the Permian Lucaogou Shale Sequence, Jimsar Sag, Junggar Basin, NW China

Lianhua Hou et al.

Summary: The Permian Lucaogou Formation in the Jimsar Sag of the Junggar Basin, NW China, is a significant area for oil exploration and production in lacustrine shale sequences. Commercially extractable oil is found in this heterogeneous formation, with different reservoir properties influencing oil production from shale or tight reservoirs. The study focuses on petrological and mineralogical characteristics, source rock properties, and molecular biogeochemistry of core extracts and crude oils to identify potential sweet spots for shale oil exploration and production.

Injection Rate-Dependent Deflecting Propagation Rule of Hydraulic Fracture: Insights from the Rate-Dependent Fracture Process Zone of Mixed-Mode (I-II) Fracturing

Yuekun Xing et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of injection rates on the deflecting propagation of hydraulic fractures (HF). Experimental results suggest that the fracture process zone length in rock-like materials increases with rising quasistatic loading rates. Rate-dependent HF deflecting propagation modes, including stable and unstable propagation, were proposed and validated through experiments. The findings provide theoretical bases for controlling HF deflecting propagation in mining and oil-gas reservoir environments.

Research on the Oil-Bearing Difference of Bedding Fractures: A Case Study of Lucaogou Formation in Jimsar Sag

Jia Lu et al.

Summary: This study examined the development of bedding fractures in the Lucaogou formation of a tight oil reservoir in Jimsar sag and investigated the factors affecting their oil-bearing properties. The bedding fractures were found to be more developed in the lower sweet spots and had favorable oil-bearing properties. The temporal and spatial coupling of formation of these fractures with the hydrocarbon generation of source rocks and the organic carbon content were identified as the main factors influencing the oil-bearing properties of the bedding fractures.
