An interplay of soil salinization and groundwater degradation threatening coexistence of oasis-desert ecosystems

Xinwei Yin et al.

Summary: In salt-affected and groundwater-fed oasis-desert systems, the balance of water and salt is crucial for stable coexistence of ecosystems. An investigation on the spatio-temporal variability of soil salinity and groundwater dynamics reveals accelerated soil salinization in water-saving agricultural lands, leading to a worsening regional water-salt imbalance. The continuous decline in groundwater tables, dramatic shifts in flow patterns, and degradation of groundwater quality are exacerbating the situation.

Driving factors of community-level plant functional traits and species distributions in the desert-wetland ecosystem of the Shule River Basin, China

Guanguang Chen et al.

Summary: Groundwater depth was found to significantly impact plant community functional traits, soil properties, and vegetation distribution. It plays a key role in driving species distribution in arid zones, along with soil K+ and soil total nitrogen content. The changes in groundwater depth can alter soil structure and nutrient enrichment, ultimately impacting vegetation distribution through water-soil-plant interactions.

Monitoring Hybrid Rice Phenology at Initial Heading Stage Based on Low-Altitude Remote Sensing Data

Yi Ma et al.

Summary: This study utilized low-altitude remote sensing technology to accurately monitor the initial heading stage of hybrid rice, with CIred edge being more suitable for monitoring RP and SGF showing better fitting performance. The research also revealed that high temperature may lead to a decrease in IHSDAS, and applying more nitrogen fertilizer could delay the growth process of rice.

A novel transport model to predict the moisture-heat-gas-salt behavior in unsaturated saline soil under evaporation

Yuanming Lai et al.

Summary: Research shows that soil desertification and salinization are serious issues in arid and semi-arid regions, requiring attention to the transport laws of salt under evaporation. The newly developed model effectively describes the interactions between moisture, heat, gas, and salt, revealing the impact of temperature difference during the evaporation process.

Mapping groundwater-dependent ecosystems in arid Central Asia: Implications for controlling regional land degradation

Chan Liu et al.

Summary: This study used remote sensing to map GDEs in Central Asia, with three validation methods confirming the accuracy of the results. The study found GDEs were concentrated around large lakes and in central Kazakhstan, accounting for 65.74% of total natural vegetation areas. At the watershed scale, the Sarysu Basin had the largest proportion of potential GDEs, while the Ysyk-Kol Basin had the lowest proportion. In conclusion, the remote sensing-based method shows potential for regional GDE mapping.

M. Toorani et al.

Summary: The study analyzed shoreline changes in the Caspian Sea's Tajan and Sefidrud areas using aerial photos and satellite images, finding significant impacts of sea level changes on coastlines. However, the Sefidrud region showed a mismatch between shoreline changes and sea level fluctuations, indicating the presence of other factors influencing coastal status.

Study on Ecological Threshold of Groundwater in Typical Salinization Area of Qian'an County

Zhiwei Qi et al.

Summary: A suitable groundwater level is crucial for maintaining the stability of vegetation communities, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. In Qian'an County, Western Jilin Province, the concept of an ecological threshold of groundwater level has been proposed to regulate healthy vegetation development and reduce soil salinization risks. By analyzing the relationship between normalized vegetation index (NDVI) and groundwater properties, reasonable groundwater thresholds have been determined, enriching groundwater research and aiding in water resource development predictions.

Importance of stopping groundwater irrigation for balancing agriculture and wetland ecosystem

Dan Li et al.

Summary: This study examines the direct and indirect impacts of agricultural water consumption on wetland ecosystems in China, showing that groundwater abstraction has a significant negative effect on wetland plant diversity. The research suggests implementing surface water irrigation as a practical alternative to groundwater extraction to address the contradiction between food security and wetland protection.

High agricultural water consumption led to the continued shrinkage of the Aral Sea during 1992-2015

Yanan Su et al.

Summary: The research found that in recent years, the Aral Sea continued to shrink, with approximately 50.38% of its water area in 1992 dried up and turned into bare land by 2015. The cultivated land area remained stable with a slight increase, while urban areas expanded slightly, likely contributing to more water consumption. Climate warming has also had a positive effect on the water supply to the Aral Sea.

The Ecological Relationship of Groundwater-Soil-Vegetation in the Oasis-Desert Transition Zone of the Shiyang River Basin

Le Cao et al.

Summary: Groundwater is crucial for vegetation growth and soil salinization in arid areas. In this study, the relationships between vegetation fractional coverage (VFC) and groundwater depth (GWD), soil salinity, soil moisture, and precipitation were comprehensively analyzed in Minqin, northwest China. The results showed that VFC was negatively correlated with soil salinity and GWD, highlighting the importance of surface soil water and groundwater for vegetation growth. The ecological differences in the shallow-buried areas in Minqin suggest the need for zoning and grading policies for ecological protection.
