Plant and soil microbial responses to irrigation retirement in semiarid cropping systems

Agustin Nunez et al.

Summary: Water scarcity limits irrigated agriculture, causing farmers to transition to dryland cropping. This study found that irrigation retirement resulted in decreased crop biomass production, particularly for maize. Soil microbial communities were less affected by irrigation retirement, with changes mostly observed in the maize agroecosystem. Winter wheat is a viable option for sustaining crop production and mitigating the negative impacts of irrigation retirement on soil health.

Aerodynamics Effect of Holes in UAV Wings Modified for VTOL Capability

Laith S. Sawaqed et al.

Summary: This research explores the possibility of modifying the X8 Skywalker from a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle into a convertiplane. Computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel experiments were conducted to analyze the performance of different wing configurations. The results indicate that the proposed modifications can generate enough lift despite reducing the wing area, with the filleted hole configuration demonstrating less drag and turbulence effects at low angles of attack.

Transformation of litter carbon to stable soil organic matter is facilitated by ungulate trampling

Yuqi Wei et al.

Summary: It was found in this study that trampling increased the transfer of litter C to the SOC pool, enhancing SOC formation, without inducing significant positive priming effects. This indicates that trampling plays an important role in SOC formation and stabilization, efficiently transferring litter C into the SOC pool.

Soil organic carbon in irrigated agricultural systems: A meta-analysis

David Emde et al.

Summary: The study found that irrigated agriculture can increase soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks, with the greatest increase observed in semi-arid regions at shallow soil depths. The impact of irrigation on SOC varies by climate and soil texture, with sprinkler irrigated sites showing an increase in SOC while drip irrigated sites showing a decrease.

Soil texture affects the coupling of litter decomposition and soil organic matter formation

Gerrit Angst et al.

Summary: Soil texture plays a significant role in litter decomposition and SOM formation, with clay-rich soil providing conditions for more efficient microbial utilization of litter material and higher retention of litter-derived carbon in the soil. Sand-rich soil and forest floor have lower abilities in stabilizing litter carbon, resulting in higher CO2 emissions and lower carbon retention in the soil.

Adaptive multi-paddock grazing enhances soil carbon and nitrogen stocks and stabilization through mineral association in southeastern US grazing lands

Samantha Mosier et al.

Summary: Research shows that adaptive multipaddock (AMP) grazing can increase soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stocks in grassland ecosystems, particularly in the mineral-associated organic matter fraction. AMP grazing helps sequester C in the soil and improve N retention in the system.

Less efficient residue-derived soil organic carbon formation under no-till irrigated corn

Sarah Leichty et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that soil with surface-applied residue produced 19% more CO2 and formed 41% less SOC compared to residue-incorporated soil. It was also found that residue-derived bulk soil C formation was more efficient when the residue was incorporated (0.60), indicating that mixing and burial of residue within the soil matrix is a key pathway of SOC formation.
