18O Isotope Labeling Combined with 31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy for Accurate Quantification of Hydrolyzable Phosphorus Species in Environmental Samples

Liming Wang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method to overcome bias in P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra caused by artificial hydrolysis, by using O-18 enriched medium for sample preparation and analysis. The results show that using O-18 enriched medium can accurately differentiate artificial hydrolysis products from natural metabolites, and quantify them accurately. The study also demonstrates that the extent of artificial hydrolysis affecting NMR spectra varies among different types of environmental samples.
