Greenalite Nanoparticles in Alkaline Vent Plumes as Templates for the Origin of Life

B. Rasmussen et al.

Summary: Mineral templates, particularly greenalite, are believed to have facilitated the emergence and evolution of life on early Earth. The nanometer-sized greenalite particles formed in hydrothermal plumes played a crucial role in the assembly of RNA-type molecules and growth of membrane vesicles. Once self-replicating RNA evolved, the mineral template became redundant, allowing protocells to freely replicate and move within the ocean.

The possible occurrence of iron-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation in an Archean Ocean analogue

Fleur A. E. Roland et al.

Summary: In the ferruginous and anoxic early Earth oceans, the connection between photoferrotrophy and ferric iron-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (AOM) has been poorly investigated. The study of AOM in a modern analogue to the Archean Ocean suggests a potential metabolic process that could change the conceptualization and modeling of metabolic and geochemical processes controlling climate conditions in the Early Earth. Further experiments focusing on the interactions between photoferrotrophs and AOM are of considerable interest.

An evolving view on biogeochemical cycling of iron

Andreas Kappler et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycling of iron plays a crucial role in environmental processes such as ocean productivity, carbon storage, greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient and contaminant fate. Recent studies have uncovered novel processes in the biogeochemical iron cycle and shown that oxidation and reduction of iron occur cyclically or simultaneously in many environments.

Ferric iron triggers greenalite formation in simulated Archean seawater

Isaac L. Hinz et al.

Summary: Sedimentary rock deposits provide detailed records of (bio)geochemical cycles in the ancient ocean, with studies showing that greenalite was an early chemical precipitate from the Archean ocean. Experiments in simulated Archean seawater revealed that a pH-driven process promotes the precipitation of iron-rich silicate phases, while minor concentrations of Fe(III) can also promote the formation of well-ordered greenalite among other phases. This suggests that greenalite in the Archean ocean may represent signals of iron oxidation reactions potentially mediated by life in circumneutral seawater.

A NOVEL APPROACH TO INVESTIGATE THE DEPOSITION OF (BIO)CHEMICAL SEDIMENTS: THE SEDIMENTATION VELOCITY OF CYANOBACTERIA-FERRIHYDRITE AGGREGATES

Yuhao Li et al.

Summary: This study used a new experimental method to investigate the sedimentation mechanism of ancient chemical sediments, showing that ferrihydrite-cyanobacteria aggregates settled to the ocean floor either through the formation of uniformly descending concentration fronts or through convective plumes. The sedimentation mechanism depended on both initial Fe(II) concentration and the pH, and two algorithms were developed to characterize the sedimentation velocity.

A 200-million-year delay in permanent atmospheric oxygenation

Simon W. Poulton et al.

Summary: The rise of atmospheric oxygen had a significant impact on the chemistry of surficial environments and Earth's habitability. Research indicates that atmospheric oxygen levels continued to fluctuate around 2.32 billion years ago, correlating with major perturbations in ocean redox chemistry and climate. Ultimately, permanent atmospheric oxygenation was achieved around 2.22 billion years ago, about 100 million years later than previously estimated.
