Simultaneous and highly sensitive determination of selenium and tellurium species in environmental samples by on-line ionic liquid based in-situ solvent formation microextraction with hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry detection

Mauricio Llaver et al.

Summary: A novel online preconcentration and speciation analysis method for inorganic Se and Te species was developed in this study. By forming a hydrophobic ionic liquid directly in the liquid sample stream, efficient extraction of analytes complexed with ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate was achieved. The method showed high sensitivity and was successfully applied to environmental sample analysis.

Anatomy of a complex mineral replacement reaction: Role of aqueous redox, mineral nucleation, and ion transport properties revealed by an in-situ study of the replacement of chalcopyrite by copper sulfides

Alok Chaudhari et al.

Summary: The fluid-driven transformation of chalcopyrite into Cu-rich sulfides is a complex mineral replacement reaction controlled by evolving mineral make-up, texture/porosity, and solution chemistry. In-situ and ex-situ experiments showed rapid reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+ during chalcopyrite replacement, with covellite forming first followed by digenite-high. The activation energies for the two kinetic stages were calculated, highlighting the intricate feedback between aqueous redox, mineral nucleation, and ion transport properties during replacement reactions.

Fingerprinting fluid evolution by trace elements in epithermal pyrite, Vatukoula Au-Te deposit, Fiji

Frederik Boerner et al.

Summary: Tellurium is an important element for green technologies, and the potential shortage caused by stagnant supply and increasing demand is a concern. The Vatukoula deposit could be a target for direct recovery of tellurium, as pyrite at the deposit contains high concentrations of tellurium and provides a natural laboratory for research.

Gold particle geomicrobiology: Using viable bacteria as a model for understanding microbe-mineral interactions

Santonu Kumar Sanyal et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycling of gold involves bacterial interactions with gold particles, where metabolically active bacteria on particles catalyze gold dissolution and re-precipitation processes. The gold-tolerant bacterium Acinetobacter sp. SK-43 isolated from gold particles contains diverse heavy-metal resistance and stress tolerance genes, enabling it to survive in potentially toxic metal-rich environments. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that Acinetobacter sp. SK-43 can survive and potentially contribute to gold biogeochemical cycling by reducing soluble gold from particles undergoing dissolution.

Understanding the mobility and retention of uranium and its daughter products

Rahul Ram et al.

Summary: The study used advanced micro-analytical techniques to track the behavior of radionuclides in U-bearing materials post-processing, revealing progressive dissolution of U-bearing minerals, release and upgrade of daughter radionuclides, influenced by sulfuric-acid-leach processing, grinding, and dissolution and reprecipitation of sulfide minerals. The processes of RN mobility, sorption, precipitation, and sulfide mineral dissolution-reprecipitation continuously occur within the hydrometallurgical circuit, controlling the rapid enrichment of radionuclides.

Summary: The optimization and validation of a method for determining and extracting inorganic ionic forms of Te(VI) and Te(IV) in soil were conducted using IC-ICP-MS. The results showed that tellurium was mainly bound with sulphides, organic matter, and silicates in the soil samples, and both Te species were present in the tested samples.

The role of cysteine in tellurate reduction and toxicity

Jennifer L. Goff et al.

Summary: The toxic mechanism of tellurate to living organisms is poorly understood, but exposure of Escherichia coli to tellurate leads to reduction to elemental tellurium and the formation of intracellular reactive oxygen species. Experimental results suggest that pre-oxidation of intracellular thiol pools can increase cellular resistance to tellurate, indicating the importance of intracellular thiols in tellurate toxicity. In addition, X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments demonstrate that cysteine can reduce tellurate to elemental tellurium, generating superoxide anions in the process, highlighting a potential source of ROS in tellurate-exposed cells' cytoplasm.

Summary: Metalloid tellurium compounds have toxic effects on both bacteria and humans, and increasing environmental pollution with tellurium may be linked to autoimmune, neurodegenerative, and oncological diseases. Resistance gene clusters to tellurium compounds have been identified in various bacterial species, exhibiting genetic and functional diversity. In addition to specific resistance mechanisms, tellurium and its toxic compounds interact with molecular systems for general detoxification and mitigation of oxidative stress.
