Contrasting Host-Parasite Population Structure: Morphology and Mitogenomics of a Parasitic Flatworm on Pelagic Deepwater Cichlid Fishes from Lake Tanganyika

Nikol Kmentova et al.

Summary: The study revealed the lake-wide occurrence of Cichlidogyrus casuarinus and highlighted the limitations of its magnifying potential for the focal host species. Additionally, the first assessment of the genetic variation of mitochondrial data in Cichlidogyrus was provided using different sequencing technologies. In bathybatine cichlid fishes, the lake-wide population differentiation pattern differs among species, indicating potential for further research on mechanisms driving host range and the role of phenotypic plasticity in diversification and speciation.

Newly discovered cichlid fish biodiversity threatened by hybridization with non-native species

Tabitha Blackwell et al.

Summary: In this study, newly discovered evolutionarily significant populations of Korogwe tilapia from southern Tanzania are threatened by hybridization with invasive Nile tilapia. Genetic analysis shows distinct differences between southern and northern populations of O. korogwe, with evidence of hybrids in southern lakes. This highlights the need for conservation interventions to protect these unique genetic resources.

tRNAscan-SE 2.0: improved detection and functional classification of transfer RNA genes

Patricia P. Chan et al.

Summary: tRNAscan-SE, a tool for predicting transfer RNA genes, has been widely used for over twenty years. Recent updates have greatly improved its ability to identify and classify tRNAs by creating nearly one hundred specialized isotype- and Glade-specific models.

Summary: The research indicates that parasite populations parasitizing hosts with poor dispersal capacity are more differentiated compared to populations parasitizing hosts with good dispersal capacity, showing more shape variation among individuals.
