Interactions between ScNAC23 and ScGAI regulate GA-mediated flowering and senescence in sugarcane

Jinlan Fang et al.

Summary: The NAC transcription factor ScNAC23 isolated from sugarcane plays a crucial role in regulating plant growth and development events, such as flowering and leaf senescence. It was found to be strongly induced in mature leaves and flowering varieties in response to exogenous gibberellin treatment, and its overexpression in Arabidopsis accelerated flowering and leaf senescence compared to wild type plants. Furthermore, it was shown to directly interact with the GA signaling inhibitor ScGAI, suggesting a novel regulatory module for GA-mediated acceleration of flowering and leaf senescence in sugarcane.

Decoupling transcription factor expression and activity enables dimmer switch gene regulation

C. Ricci-Tam et al.

Summary: Gene-regulatory networks achieve complex mappings of inputs to outputs through mechanisms that are poorly understood. In the galactose-responsive pathway in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the decision to activate transcription of genes encoding pathway components is controlled independently from the expression level, resembling a mechanical dimmer switch. Hierarchical regulation of a single transcription factor enables dimmer switch gene regulation, allowing cells to fine-tune responses to multi-input environments on physiological and evolutionary time scales.

Systems biology for crop improvement

Lekha T. Pazhamala et al.

Summary: The generation of large-scale data from various omics levels in plant species has become routine, but the independent study of datasets in different crop species has hindered a comprehensive understanding of complex traits. A systems biology approach with integration of multiple omics data and modeling is crucial for understanding the flow of biological information underlying complex traits and biological networks. This approach allows a holistic understanding of dynamic systems and interactions with the external environment in phenotypic expression.

Dark-Induced Barley Leaf Senescence - A Crop System for Studying Senescence and Autophagy Mechanisms

Ewelina Paluch-Lubawa et al.

Summary: This review synthesizes knowledge on dark-induced barley leaf senescence as a model for studying senescence and autophagy mechanisms. It discusses the importance of chloroplasts and Rubisco, as well as morphological changes, metabolic modifications, and transcriptomic differences. The review also highlights the role of autophagy in regulating stress-induced senescence and the switch between cell survival and cell death functions.

Wheat leaf senescence and its regulatory gene network

Nigarin Sultana et al.

Summary: Wheat leaf senescence is a complex developmental process influenced by plant hormones and environmental factors, with direct impacts on grain yield and protein content. Early senescence is associated with high protein content, while late senescence is related to high yield. The regulation of senescence involves multiple genes and is influenced by external, internal factors, and genotypic variations.
