Deeply Altered Genome Architecture in the Endoparasitic Flowering Plant Sapria himalayana Griff. (Rafflesiaceae)

Liming Cai et al.

Summary: Despite significant differences in genome size among angiosperms, key features of genome architecture are largely conserved. The highly modified genome of Sapria himalayana Griff. demonstrates high levels of gene loss compared to other vascular plants and extreme disparity in intron size among retained genes. Furthermore, at least 1.2% of the Sapria genome is inferred to be derived from host-to-parasite horizontal gene transfers, highlighting the value of HGTs as DNA fossils to study extinct symbioses.

Prosopanche cocuccii (Hydnoraceae): a new species from Southern Brazil

Jordano D. Tavares De Carvalho et al.

Summary: Prosopanche cocuccii is a newly described species from Southern Brazil, closely resembling P. bonacinae but distinguished by specific floral morphological characteristics. The new species exhibits rare features for the genus, such as highly branched rhizomes and flowers usually grouped in fascicles. Additionally, P. cocuccii produces a large number of rhizomes and fruits for each single host specimen of tobacco, impacting the height and growth of its host plant.

Discordant Phylogenomic Placement of Hydnoraceae and Lactoridaceae Within Piperales Using Data From All Three Genomes

Matthias Jost et al.

Summary: The phylogenetic relationships within the magnoliid order Piperales have been extensively studied, yet the relationships of the monotypic family Lactoridaceae and the holoparasitic Hydnoraceae within the order remain unclear. Extensive phylogenomic reconstructions based on subcellular genomes have led to the proposal of excluding Hydnoraceae and Lactoridaceae from the broad circumscription of Aristolochiaceae, instead recognizing four distinct families within Piperales.

Comparative Analysis of Plastid Genomes in the Non-photosynthetic Genus Thismia Reveals Ongoing Gene Set Reduction

Sophia V. Yudina et al.

Summary: This study investigates a diversity of plastid genomes in closely related non-photosynthetic plants, illustrating how gradual gene loss shapes the miniaturized plastomes of these plants and revealing the process of reductive evolution in heterotrophic plants.

Extensive genomic rearrangements mediated by repetitive sequences in plastomes of Medicago and its relatives

Shuang Wu et al.

Summary: Extensive genomic rearrangements and abundant repetitive elements were detected in plastomes of Medicago and its relatives. The repeat content was found to be positively correlated with the degree of genomic rearrangements, with repeat-mediated illegitimate recombination identified as the major mechanism leading to genome instability. The findings provide valuable genomic resources for further investigation into plastome evolution in legumes.
