Recent advances in asphaltene transformation in heavy oil hydroprocessing: Progress, challenges, and future perspectives

Manh Tung Nguyen et al.

Summary: Traditional light petroleum supply is decreasing, leading to a higher dependence on heavy oil sources. Hydroprocessing is an effective method for heavy oil upgrading, but asphaltenes may interfere with the process efficiency, requiring proper treatment. Research has extensively studied the impact of operating conditions on asphaltenes, aiming to achieve deep conversion during hydroprocessing.

Asphaltene behavior at the interface oil-nanofluids: Implications to adsorption

Ronald Nguele et al.

Summary: The study found that asphaltenes have a stronger affinity with silica-based nanofluid film compared to sandstone wetted with base fluid, resulting in a four-fold lower adsorption. The adsorption of asphaltenes decreases with the decrease in polymer concentration. The size of asphaltene molecules' aromatic core affects their diffusion and adsorption, while an increase in the ratio of heteroatom-to-total carbon enhances their affinity with the nanofluid film.

Role of Polymer-Based Nanofluids on Asphaltene Adsorption during Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Injection

Ronald Nguele et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the use of polymer-based nanofluid can effectively reduce asphaltene adsorption in CO2 oil recovery, with nanofluid exhibiting superior interfacial tension reduction compared to water, and can reduce asphaltene adsorption by providing steric hindrance.
