Spontaneous imbibition in coal with in-situ dynamic micro-CT imaging

Yuejian Lu et al.

Summary: Capillary forces play a crucial role in the gas/fluid behavior and fluid distribution in porous media, particularly in evaluating the pore-fracture characteristics of coal. Different stages of spontaneous imbibition process can reveal the fluid flow characteristics, while a low flow-back rate of fracturing fluid may lead to severe permeability damage in coal. The gas relative permeability of coal attenuates exponentially with imbibition time, showing the influence of capillary force based on fractal theory.

A numerical solution to the effects of surface roughness on water-coal contact angle

Chong Li et al.

Summary: Coal dust poses a great threat to the health and safety of coal mine workers, and wet dust removal is an effective method. Research shows that the surface roughness of coal affects the wetting of droplets, influencing the contact angle of hydrophilic and hydrophobic coal surfaces.

Investigation of interactions between oxygen-containing groups and water molecules on coal surfaces using density functional theory

Chengyong Wang et al.

Summary: The oxygen-containing group plays a crucial role in determining the water wettability of coal surfaces. Oxygen atoms in the oxygen-containing group enhance the hydrophilicity of coal surfaces by forming strong hydrogen bonds with water molecules. The impact of oxygen-containing groups on water adsorption capability follows the order -OOH > -OH > -CHO > -OCH3 based on the combined action of hydrogen bonds and van der Waals force.

The influence of CO2 and CH4 mixture on water wettability in organic rich shale nanopore Wei

Wei Yong et al.

Summary: This study utilized Molecular Dynamics simulations to investigate the wetting behavior of water in organic-rich shale nanopores under the influence of CH4/CO2 mixtures. The results showed that the contact angle of water droplets on graphite substrate is significantly affected by the pressures of CH4 and CO2, with CO2 exhibiting stronger interaction with organic-rich surfaces compared to methane. This leads to an approximately linear increase of the contact angle with the CO2 mole fraction in CH4/CO2 mixtures.

Investigation on micro-surface adhesion of coals and implications for gas occurrence and coal and gas outburst mechanism

Xianghui Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the micro-surface adhesion of outburst-prone and non-prone coal using an AFM, finding that the adhesion of outburst-prone coal is significantly higher than non-prone coal, with a positive linear correlation between adhesion and action distance. The study also proposed a concept of critical velocity V-cr for gas adsorption and divided coal and gas outburst into four stages, suggesting a micro chain reaction mechanism.
