Ethylene glycol and glycolic acid production by wild-typeEscherichia coli

Xiyang Lu et al.

Summary: The study focused on producing ethylene glycol and glycolic acid using xylonic acid as a carbon source. It achieved high production yields through the biosynthesis pathways of Escherichia coli, and also constructed strains that specifically produce either ethylene glycol or glycolic acid. This provides new insights into the biosynthesis pathways of these chemicals and offers a novel approach to biomass utilization.

Effect of integrated treatment on improving the enzymatic digestibility of poplar and the structural features of isolated hemicelluloses

Shao-Chao Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a two-step hydrothermal pretreatment combined with alkali extraction method was used to deconstruct poplar cell walls for enzymatic hydrolysis, resulting in the removal of a significant amount of hemicelluloses and lignin. Confocal Raman microscopy revealed that hemicelluloses were unevenly removed from cell walls, mainly originating from the secondary wall. Water-soluble hemicelluloses were found to have a more branched structure compared to alkali-soluble hemicelluloses, with a linear backbone of (1 -> 4)-beta-D-Xylp and 4-O-Me-alpha-d-GlcpA side chains identified in hemicelluloses isolated from poplar. This work provides an efficient pathway to convert poplar into fermentable sugars and hemicelluloses with significant yield.

Regulating the electron-hole separation to promote selective oxidation of biomass using ZnS@Bi2S3 nanosheet catalyst

Mingsai Li et al.

Summary: A new hydrothermal method was reported for the synthesis of ZnS@Bi2S3 nanosheets, which were used for the oxidation of biomass-derived monosaccharides to produce sugar acids. Compared to pure Bi2S3, ZnS@Bi2S3 nanosheets showed broadened band gap and improved stability, enhancing the photocatalytic activity by suppressing charge carrier recombination. Adsorption of xylose and oxygen on Bi2S3 and ZnS surfaces led to selective oxidation of xylose to xylonic acid through radical reactions.

Copper oxide functionalized chitosan hybrid hydrogels for highly efficient photocatalytic-reforming of biomass-based monosaccharides to lactic acid

Yancong Li et al.

Summary: This study presents a freezing-thawing strategy for the preparation of an alkaline CuO-chitosan hybrid hydrogel with highly efficient photocatalytic conversion of xylose to lactic acid. The synergistic effect between CuO and alkaline chitosan hydrogel enables a high lactic acid yield under a weak alkaline system, with a retained high yield after multiple cycles. The proposed system shows potential for industrial-scale production of lactic acid from biomass-derived sugars.

Regulating TiO2/MXenes catalysts to promote photocatalytic performance of highly selective oxidation of d-xylose

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a TiO2/Ti3C2 photocatalyst was successfully designed for the oxidation of xylose to d-xylonic acid under ambient conditions, achieving a yield of 64.2% with excellent stability. Mechanistic study revealed that electron transfer from TiO2 to Ti3C2 significantly increased the life time of light-induced charge carriers, leading to improved photocatalytic performance.
