Restoring shallow lakes impaired by eutrophication: Approaches, outcomes, and challenges

Jonathan M. Abell et al.

Summary: This review examines approaches used in addressing eutrophication in shallow lakes and evaluates a set of case studies. It finds that reducing external nutrient loads is a crucial component of successful restoration, although supplementary measures can also support restoration goals. However, restoring shallow lakes faces various challenges, including insufficient reductions in external nutrient loads, biogeochemical lags, resistance to change in stable algal-dominated states, delayed macrophyte reestablishment, climate change, lake-specific approaches, and social and political obstacles.

Shifting states, shifting services: Linking regime shifts to changes in ecosystem services of shallow lakes

Annette B. G. Janssen et al.

Summary: Shallow lakes can transition between stable states due to anthropogenic or natural factors, impacting the ecosystem services they provide. Different dominant groups of primary producers in these states determine the types of services supplied. The identified ecosystem services in shallow lakes are linked to various Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting the importance of considering trade-offs in conserving and restoring these ecosystems for the natural value they bring.

Particulate organic matter as causative factor to eutrophication of subtropical deep freshwater: Role of typhoon (tropical cyclone) in the nutrient cycling

Xiaofei Gao et al.

Summary: Typhoons significantly alter nutrient levels and thermocline position in deep waters, leading to steep increases of total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, and total phosphorus. Small-sized or pico-sized particulate organic matter shows a stronger response to typhoons and plays a key role in boosting nutrient cycling in deep waters.

Greening of the boreal peatland food web: Periphyton supports secondary production in northern peatlands

Hannah M. Ferguson et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the spatial and temporal variability of food web dynamics in northern peatlands, and quantify the influence of nutrient availability on primary and secondary production. Isotope analysis showed that periphyton played a significant role in the food web, with increasing algal biomass leading to an increase in herbivore and predatory macroinvertebrate biomass. Nutrient addition enhanced both periphyton and macroinvertebrate biomass.
