Whole body measurements using near-infrared spectroscopy in a rat spinal cord contusion injury model

Brianna Kish et al.

Summary: This study focused on using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to monitor cerebral and peripheral vascular condition during recovery after spinal cord injury. The results showed that NIRS accurately reflected physiological changes in rats, providing a promising method to monitor whole body hemodynamics after spinal cord injury.

Critical role of mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 in acrolein sequestering in rat spinal cord injury

Seth A. Herr et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated a significant decrease in ALDH2 expression post-SCI in rats, which was not observed in rats given Alda-1. Administration of Alda-1 significantly reduced acrolein levels in the spinal cord, decreased cyst pathology, improved motor function, and attenuated mechanical hypersensitivity post-SCI.

Acute and non-resolving inflammation associate with oxidative injury after human spinal cord injury

Tobias Zrzavy et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed characterization of inflammatory responses and oxidative tissue injury in human traumatic spinal cord injury lesions. It reveals that ongoing inflammatory responses and neurotoxicity could lead to sustained neuronal damage long after the initial trauma, potentially impacting the response to rehabilitation and recovery in patients.

Evidence of acrolein in synovial fluid of dogs with osteoarthritis as a potential inflammatory biomarker

Seth A. Herr et al.

Summary: This study confirmed the presence of acrolein in the synovial fluid of dogs with osteoarthritis. Freezing synovial fluid for up to 5 years did not significantly affect the detection of acrolein-lysine adduct and MMP2 in the samples.
