Smart packaging films based on starch/polyvinyl alcohol and Lycium ruthenicum anthocyanins-loaded nano-complexes: Functionality, stability and application

Yan Qin et al.

Summary: Smart packaging films were prepared by incorporating free Lycium ruthenicum anthocyanins and anthocyanins-loaded nanocomplexes into starch/PVA blend. The films containing anthocyanins-loaded nanocomplexes showed better stability and mechanical properties, while the films containing free anthocyanins exhibited superior light blocking and antioxidant properties. Both films effectively prolonged the shelf life of refrigerated bass fillets to 7 days.

Active and intelligent gellan gum-based packaging films for controlling anthocyanins release and monitoring food freshness

Li-Ting Wu et al.

Summary: This study developed active and intelligent packaging films by incorporating Clitoria ternatea extract into gellan gum film, which exhibited antioxidant, antibacterial, and colorimetric pH indicator properties. The addition of heat-treated soy protein isolate to the film greatly reduced swelling capacity, controlled anthocyanins release, and modified physical and mechanical properties, allowing the films to change color during seafood spoilage, demonstrating their potential for freshness monitoring.

Bring some colour to your package: Freshness indicators based on anthocyanin extracts

Raquel Becerril et al.

Summary: Although ATH-based indicators are able to correctly indicate food shelf-life in several products at a laboratory scale, their industrial production is still impaired by the production methods used for this type of sensors. Furthermore, ATHs are labile compounds that require stabilization in the packaging material to yield stable, standardized and durable IP materials.
