Human milk oligosaccharides, infant growth, and adiposity over the first 4 months of lactation

Aristea Binia et al.

Summary: The study found a negative correlation between lacto-N-neotetraose and length change, and a positive correlation between sialyllacto-N-tetraose c and weight for length. However, the changes in HMO composition had little influence on infant growth and body composition in healthy mothers and infants.

Longitudinal Changes in Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) Over the Course of 24 Months of Lactation

Jasmine F. Plows et al.

Summary: In a longitudinal study of Hispanic mother-infant pairs, it was found that the majority of HMOs in breast milk decrease in concentration over lactation, except for 3FL and 3'SL which significantly increase. Further research is needed to fully understand the functions of these HMOs.

Human Milk Microbiota and Oligosaccharides: A Glimpse into Benefits, Diversity, and Correlations

Carole Ayoub Moubareck

Summary: Human milk contains a variety of beneficial components, including human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) which play a crucial role in shaping intestinal microbiota and modulating immune response. Recent studies suggest complex correlations between HMOs and milk microbiota, potentially influenced by environmental factors, genetics, geographical location, and other factors. Ongoing research aims to understand the mechanistic processes through which the biological assets of milk promote development, microbiota shaping, and immunity.

The Mean of Milk: A Review of Human Milk Oligosaccharide Concentrations throughout Lactation

Buket Soyyilmaz et al.

Summary: Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are complex carbohydrates abundant in human milk, with over 200 different structures identified. The concentrations of HMOs in breast milk vary according to lactation period and mother's genetic status. Studies have shown significant variations in HMO concentrations for different types across lactation stages. In mature pooled human milk, the top 15 individual HMOs make up the majority of total HMO concentration.

Summary: HMO concentrations are highest in colostrum, followed by transitional milk, and decline in mature milk. Significant differences in HMO composition have been observed between countries, and different HMOs predominate over the course of lactation.
