Immune correlates of NF-κB and TNFα promoter DNA methylation in Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) muscle and immune parameters change response to vibrio anguillarum infection

Jun Yang et al.

Summary: Infection by Vibrio anguillarum can activate the NF-kappa B and TNF alpha pathway in the fish immune organs, leading to significant upregulation of these genes in the muscle of Japanese flounder. The expression of TNF alpha gene in the muscle is regulated by DNA methylation and its methylation level is negatively correlated with expression. The study highlighted the importance of understanding immune response mechanisms in fish breeding for disease resistance.

The phospholipase D inhibitor FIPI potently blocks EGF-induced calcium signaling in human breast cancer cells

Helena M. Stricker et al.

Summary: In this study, blocking PLD activity with the specific inhibitor FIPI or knocking down PDL1 expression by siRNA significantly impaired EGF-induced calcium release in MDA-MB-468-NEO and MDA-MB-468-HER2 cells, indicating a potential connection between PLD activity and PLC-gamma 1-mediated calcium signaling. However, the exact mechanism of how PLD activity interferes with calcium release from intracellular stores remains unclear.

Distribution, fate and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in atmosphere and surface water of multiple coral reef regions from the South China Sea: A case study in spring-summer

Ruijie Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed the wide occurrence and sources of PAHs in coral reef environments in the South China Sea. PAH concentrations in the atmosphere were influenced by air mass origins, while concentrations in seawater were affected by terrigenous pollution and ocean currents. Source apportionment identified spilled oil and combustion in neighboring countries as the main contributors to PAHs in coral reef regions.

The toxic impacts of microplastics (MPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on haematic parameters in a marine bivalve species and their potential mechanisms of action

Shuge Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that both MPs and PAHs in the marine ecosystem may have adverse effects on the haematic parameters of blood clams, including decreased total haemocyte count, changes in haematic composition, and inhibition of haemocyte phagocytosis. Exposure to MPs and PAHs may lead to toxic impacts on haematic parameters by increasing intracellular ROS contents, causing LPO and DNA damage, reducing haemocyte viability, and disrupting important molecular signaling pathways. Moreover, coexposure to MPs and PAHs resulted in more severe adverse impacts on all parameters, indicating a significant synergistic effect.
