Effects of different carbon sources on growth performance of Litopenaeus vannamei and water quality in the biofloc system in low salinity

Hai-Hong Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that in a biofloc system with low salinity, soluble glucose and molasses are good carbon sources for the grow-out culture of Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp. Shrimp performance and water quality were significantly better in glucose and molasses treatments compared to starch treatment. This suggests that carbon source choice can impact shrimp growth and water quality in biofloc systems.

A review of the factors affecting tilapia aquaculture production in Southern Africa

Ngonidzashe A. G. Moyo et al.

Summary: Tilapia production in most Southern African countries has been low, with Zambia experiencing significant growth in recent years. Economic factors, choice of tilapia species, and production system are identified as key factors affecting production in the region. The lack of profitability due to cheaper wild caught and imported tilapia is identified as the overriding factor affecting tilapia aquaculture production in Southern Africa.

Summary: In this study, different carbon sources were used to compare the growth performance of giant river prawn postlarvae in a biofloc technology system. It was found that the maize starch treatment had the best feed conversion rate, while the final weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate were similar among the five treatments. Additionally, the maize starch group had higher gross return, net return, and benefit-cost ratio compared to other groups. The highest lipid content was observed in the maize starch bioflocs.

Summary: The major cost in animal production is attributed to feed, but most growers have not yet accepted alternative materials due to vast variations in nutrient components. With environmental issues related to unsustainable feed and animal production methods, rapid and non-destructive models have been developed for quantifying nutrients in alternative materials. High spectral imaging has shown reliable performance in quantifying chemical components of different by-products, indicating its feasibility in commercial settings to reduce costs and mitigate environmental issues.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of dietary fermented yeast extracts on Nile tilapia broodstock and seed survival. Results showed that adding Hilyses to the broodstock diet increased seed production, survival, hematological parameters, and antioxidant power, while also improving intestinal microstructure and gene expression related to immunity and growth. The growth indices of fry and fingerlings were significantly increased in all Hilyses-treated groups, with the (H-H) group showing the highest performance, suggesting that dietary fermented yeast could be a strategic solution to sustain tilapia production.

Impact of dietary phytase on tilapia performance and biofloc water quality

Bartholomew W. Green et al.

Summary: The study showed that adding 6-phytase to a dicalcium phosphate-free practical diet for hybrid tilapia did not significantly affect weight, weight gain, and feed intake compared to the positive control diet. However, fish fed the phosphorus-free diet had lower market size numbers, poorer feed conversion ratios, and higher intraperitoneal fat contents. Additionally, the accumulation rates of different phosphorus forms in tanks fed the phosphorus-free diet were significantly lower compared to the positive control diet, indicating a decrease in phosphorus loading from feed.

Summary: The study found that in a biofloc system, shrimp fed with medium protein level (30%) showed the best growth performance, while those fed with high protein (35%) performed better than those fed with low protein (25%) and the control group (35%). In terms of immune parameters, shrimp fed with high protein diet exhibited higher HA and PO activities in plasma, while medium protein diet resulted in higher PO activity in serum. Additionally, the higher protein diet group showed better inhibition of lysozyme and SOD compared to the low protein diet group. The study suggested that supplementation of biofloc with high protein levels could enhance the immune response of shrimps.
