A flammability study of aluminium hydroxide (ATH) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) used with hemp/epoxy composites

Asanka P. Basnayake et al.

Summary: A detailed study was conducted on the flammability of aluminium hydroxide and ammonium polyphosphate in natural fiber composites manufactured using a resin transfer molding process. Various concentrations of each retardant were used, and the study involved thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimetry, radiant heat fluxes, and transient plane source method to examine the ignition and burning rate. The research demonstrated a correlation between increasing retardant concentration and flammability.

Investigation of the engineering properties of cementless stabilized earth blocks with alkali-activated eggshell and rice husk ash as a binder

K. Poorveekan et al.

Summary: The study explores the use of waste materials instead of cement to produce stabilized earth blocks, and through experimental research, determines the optimal mix proportions. The results indicate that geopolymer blocks made mainly of eggshell powder and rice husk ash are suitable for production, achieving the strength limits recommended by the Sri Lankan standard for non-load bearing masonry units. The study also shows that geopolymer technology can significantly reduce production costs, energy requirements, and CO2 emissions.

Development of biomaterial fillers using eggshells, water hyacinth fibers, and banana fibers for green concrete construction

Samit Niyasom et al.

Summary: Water hyacinth fiber, banana fiber, and eggshell powder were used as biomaterial fillers to enhance the physical and mechanical properties of concrete. The results showed that adding eggshell powder at a ratio of 0.05 (by weight) led to the best performance in terms of bulk density, true density, water absorption, compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, and maximum load in the concrete composite.
