Effect of graphene on the interfacial and mechanical properties of hybrid glass/Kevlar fiber metal laminates

S. Navid Hosseini Abbandanak et al.

Summary: The remarkable resurgence of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) is mainly due to their hybrid properties of light metals and fibers reinforced polymer (FRP). This study investigated the effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the flexural and Charpy impact properties of FMLs made of aluminum (Al) 2024 reinforced with hybrid glass/Kevlar fibers-epoxy. The results showed that the addition of an appropriate amount of GNPs improved the flexural strength, modulus, and impact strength of FMLs, while higher amounts of GNPs led to a decrease in these properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations revealed improved adhesion at the interfaces, but excessive GNPs weakened the FMLs and made them more brittle.
