Global epidemiology and changing clinical presentations of invasive meningococcal disease: a narrative review

Ala-Eddine Deghmane et al.

Summary: Neisseria meningitidis, known as the meningococcus, causes significant morbidity and mortality globally through epidemic or sporadic invasive infections. The changing epidemiology of the bacteria has led to emerging meningococcal genotypes with unusual clinical presentations that may result in higher case fatality rates. Timely diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial for improving patient survival, given the unpredictability and severity of this bacterial infection.

Evaluating Vaccination Programs That Prevent Diseases With Potentially Catastrophic Health Outcomes: How Can We Capture the Value of Risk Reduction?

Josephine Mauskopf et al.

Summary: This commentary discusses different economic evaluation methods to capture the value of reducing the risk of rare but catastrophic health outcomes in vaccination programs. Using invasive meningococcal disease as an example, alternative approaches are described to illustrate how benefits of vaccination can be valued beyond traditional cost-effectiveness analyses.

A review of the epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease and vaccination strategies in North Africa

Muhamed-Kheir Taha et al.

Summary: The epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in North Africa and the adequacy of preventive measures vary across countries in the region. The most frequently identified serotype in young children under 5 years was meningococcal serogroup B (MenB), which showed genetic heterogeneity. National vaccination programs in Morocco and Egypt contributed to a decrease in serogroup A incidence and meningococcal outbreaks.

Australian Meningococcal Surveillance Programme Annual Report, 2020

Monica M. Lahra et al.

Summary: In 2020, Australia reported 90 cases of Invasive Meningococcal Disease (IMD), the lowest number since the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) began in 1991. The most common serogroup identified was MenB, especially in those under 5 years and 15-19 years age groups, while MenW and MenY were more common in individuals aged 45 years and older. Out of 61 IMD isolates, 58 showed decreased susceptibility to penicillin, but all were susceptible to ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, and rifampicin.
