Drag Distribution in Idealized Heterogeneous Urban Environments

Birgit S. Sutzl et al.

Summary: Large-eddy simulations were conducted on nine idealized heterogeneous urban morphologies with identical building density and frontal area index to investigate the impact of heterogeneity on urban airflow. Results showed that the vertical structure of mean flow and the dispersive vertical momentum transport within the roughness sublayer were strongly influenced by the building morphologies, with a new frontal area index introduced to characterize the vertical distribution of frontal area in the urban canopy.

On the Experimental, Numerical and Data-Driven Methods to Study Urban Flows

Pablo Torres et al.

Summary: Understanding the flow in urban environments is crucial for addressing air quality and thermal effects in cities worldwide. Utilizing data-driven methods and machine learning algorithms can shed light on the dynamics of urban flows and help tackle sustainability challenges associated with them. Integrating artificial intelligence with urban flows can lead to a new research direction to uncover physical mechanisms related to urban pollution.

Variability of physical meteorology in urban areas at different scales: implications for air quality

Denise Hertwig et al.

Summary: Tall buildings have a significant impact on urban air flow and dispersion, especially in the near-wake region. Clusters of tall buildings can alter the shape of pollutant plumes and cause vertical spreading of pollutants at different heights. These findings emphasize the importance of tall buildings in urban environments.
