Acute Kidney Injury in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients: Results From the Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury Study

Chiara Robba et al.

Summary: Acute kidney injury is a common occurrence in polytrauma patients, and its specific prevalence after traumatic brain injury is less recognized. This study aimed to describe the occurrence rate, risk factors, timing, and outcomes associated with acute kidney injury in a large cohort of traumatic brain injury patients. The results show that acute kidney injury after traumatic brain injury occurs early, affects about one in 10 patients, and has a negative impact on mortality and neurologic outcomes at 6 months. Osmotic therapy use during ICU stay was identified as a modifiable risk factor for acute kidney injury.
