Alterations in the conjunctival surface bacterial microbiome in bacterial keratitis patients

Sisinthy Shivaji et al.

Summary: This study characterized the microbial keratitis and conjunctival bacterial microbiomes to identify dysbiosis in bacterial keratitis patients, compared to healthy controls, showing an increase in pathogenic bacteria abundance. It provides new insights for further research in related diseases.

Ethnicity influences the gut microbiota of individuals sharing a geographical location: a cross-sectional study from a middle-income country

Jacky Dwiyanto et al.

Summary: The study found that ethnicity has a significant impact on gut microbiota in a Malaysian community, even after controlling for other factors. Lifestyle, dietary habits, and unknown differences collectively contribute to variation in gut microbiota across ethnicities, making ethnicity a reliable proxy for identifying lifestyle and dietary variations within the community.

Characterization of Ocular Surface Microbial Profiles Revealed Discrepancies between Conjunctival and Corneal Microbiota

Anna Matysiak et al.

Summary: The study used RNA-Seq data to assess microbial diversity in human corneal tissue and conjunctival swab samples, revealing that most ocular microbiota were classified into Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria phyla. While bacterial growth was found in only 50% of conjunctival samples, PCR detection provided a broader overview of positive results, and RNA-Seq assessment showed significant variability of corneal microbial communities, including fastidious bacteria and viruses. The combined techniques allowed for a comprehensive characterization of the eye microbiome's elements, particularly in terms of microbiota diversity.

The Ocular Microbiome in Stevens-Johnson Syndrome

Thanachaporn Kittipibul et al.

Summary: The ocular surface microbiome is crucial for maintaining the homeostasis of the ocular surface, with abnormalities linked to various eye conditions. Research shows changes in the ocular microbiome structure in SJS patients, including alterations in the types and quantities of bacterial communities. Further studies will provide a better understanding of this disease.

The human gut microbiome and health inequities

Katherine R. Amato et al.

Summary: Individuals who are marginalized due to various social factors are more susceptible to diseases, with the gut microbiome playing a crucial role in health inequities. However, there is limited research on directly integrating the gut microbiome into investigations of health inequities. Considering host-gut microbe interactions can enhance understanding and management of health inequities.

Understanding the Interactions Between the Ocular Surface Microbiome and the Tear Proteome

Denise C. Zysset-Burri et al.

Summary: The study explored the interplay between the ocular surface microbiome and the tear proteome to better understand the pathogenesis of ocular surface-associated diseases. The results showed associations between the microbiome and tear proteome, suggesting a role in human immune defense and potential impact on treatment strategies for ocular surface-associated diseases.
