Three Kinds of Niche Construction

Bendik Hellem Aaby et al.

Summary: Niche construction theory examines how organisms can alter selection pressures by changing the feature-factor relationship between themselves and their environment. The current categorization of niche construction fails to include all possible ways organisms engage in niche construction. A reconceptualization is proposed, dividing niche construction into constitutive, relational, and external approaches, along with examples to support the need for this reconceptualization.

Realistic genetic architecture enables organismal adaptation as predicted under the folk definition of inclusive fitness

Guillermo Garcia-Costoya et al.

Summary: The study used individual-based simulations to investigate the maximization of adaptability in individual organisms when genetic architectures are more or less suitable for cumulative multi-locus evolution. The results supported a re-definition of inclusive fitness and highlighted how our conceptual understanding of adaptation at the phenotypic level should inform our choice of genetic assumptions in abstract simplified models.
