Diagnostic performance of serum interleukin-6 in pediatric acute appendicitis: a systematic review

Javier Arredondo Montero et al.

Summary: This study examined the diagnostic performance of serum interleukin-6 in pediatric acute appendicitis and found that it has limited diagnostic value when used as a single marker. Serum interleukin-6 has moderate sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing non-complicated acute appendicitis in children, but increased sensitivity and specificity in complicated appendicitis. There is a direct relationship between serum level of interleukin-6 and the hours of evolution of abdominal pain in children with acute appendicitis. Further research is needed to explore the potential of interleukin-6 in classifying complicated and uncomplicated appendicitis, especially in the context of non-operative management.

Summary: This study found that individual biomarkers were not sufficient for the accurate diagnosis of pediatric appendicitis, but a combination of physical examination, laboratory, and ultrasound imaging could serve as a good diagnostic tool for the condition.
