Organocatalytic synthesis of poly (hydroxymethylfuroate) via ring-opening polymerization of 5-hydroxymethytfurfurat-based cyclic oligoesters

Daniele Ragno et al.

Summary: The synthesis of hydroxymethylfuroate macrocyclic oligoesters promoted by an N-heterocyclic carbene organocatalyst is presented, followed by the subsequent organocatalytic, entropically-driven ring-opening polymerization leading to the fully furan-based poly(hydroxymethylfuroate). The target macrocycles have been obtained directly from the platform chemical HMF under high dilution conditions using a quinone as the external oxidant and the green solvent Me-THF. The polymerization process has been optimized with the couple triazabicyclodecene/n-octanol as catalyst/initiator, resulting in bio-based poly-HMF with good thermal stability and a semicrystalline structure.

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed oxidation of unactivated aldimines to amides via imine umpolung under aerobic conditions

Jakkula Ramarao et al.

Summary: In this study, we present a novel method for converting imines to amides using an eco-friendly approach. The method involves an NHC-catalyzed oxidation of unactivated aldimines and utilizes molecular oxygen and dimethyl carbonate as the sole oxidant and solvent, respectively, under mild reaction conditions. The developed method demonstrates a broad substrate scope, high yields, and scalability, making it practical for large-scale synthesis.

Summary: The polycondensation of diamines and dialdehydes using an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyst, quinone oxidant, and hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) was employed to synthesize oligomeric polyamides (PAs) with different number-average molecular weights. The study also demonstrated the use of furanic dialdehyde monomers for the production of known and previously unreported biobased PAs.

Asymmetric Carbene-Catalyzed Oxidation of Functionalized Aldimines as 1,4-Dipoles

Guanjie Wang et al.

Summary: Functionalized aldimines have been used as new 1,4-dipole precursors in carbene catalysis, leading to enantiodivergent organocatalysis for the synthesis of both (R)- and (S)- enantiomers of compounds with quaternary carbon centers. The key factors for controlling enantioselectivity were found to be hydrogen bond C-H...F interactions between catalyst and substrate. These new 1,4-dipoles can also react with isatin and its imines under carbene catalysis, producing spiro oxindoles with excellent enantiomeric ratios.

New (and Old) Monomers from Biorefineries to Make Polymer Chemistry More Sustainable

Majd Al-Naji et al.

Summary: This article discusses recent approaches to reduce the carbon footprint of typical mass polymers by using the biorefinery concept, which involves replacing fossil monomers with those made from regrowing dendritic biomass. New and green catalytic synthetic routes for lactic acid, isosorbide, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid, and p-xylene are presented, as well as unconventional lignocellulosic biomass-derived monomers like alpha-methylene-gamma-valerolactone and levoglucosenol. The differences in catalytic unit operations of the biorefinery and the challenges that must be addressed during the synthesis of each monomer are also discussed.

Regiodivergent Isosorbide Acylation by Oxidative N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysis in Batch and Continuous Flow

Daniele Ragno et al.

Summary: A new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed strategy was developed for the regioselective monoesterification of isosorbide (IS) at specific positions, using aldehydes as acylating agents under oxidative conditions. Experimental evidence suggests the role of stereoelectronic features in determining the acylation selectivity, and the strategy showed promising results in producing monoacyl-isosorbides with satisfactory regioselectivity levels. Additionally, the heterogeneous phase application of the exo-selective triazolium salt promoter in continuous-flow catalysis demonstrated comparable catalytic activity and regioselectivity to the homogeneous counterpart.

Recent Advances in N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalyzed Oxidative Cyclization for the Formation of Heterocycles

T. Pavithra et al.

Summary: Oxidative N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed cyclization is an efficient strategy for constructing various N- and O-heterocycles with excellent enantioselectivities. The reaction proceeds via an acyl azolium intermediate, which is an active species capable of forming a diverse array of heterocycles through reactions with suitable substrates. Recent reports have summarized different strategies for formal annulations between incoming substrates and acyl azolium or other active intermediates, leading to the formation of various heterocycles.
