Minimally Invasive and Robotic Mitral Valve Surgery: Methods and Outcomes in a 20-Year Review

Summary: In the mid- to late-1990s, the cardiac surgery community began to adopt limited incisions in mitral valve surgery, replacing classic midline sternotomy with ministernotomies and right-sided minithoracotomies. With the availability of adjunct technologies like videoscopy, advanced peripheral cannulation techniques, and surgical robots, minimally invasive mitral valve repair has become routine in many centers globally by 2021. Through reviewing 50 consecutive patient series published between 1999 and 2019, it was found that over 20,000 patients underwent three main versions of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery, with specific results and cumulative outcomes reported.
