Mechanism of contaminants degradation in aqueous solution by persulfate in different Fe(II)-based synergistic activation environments: Taking chlorinated organic compounds and benzene series as the targets

Zhengyuan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the synergistic effect of Fe(II)/CA, Fe(II)/nZVI, and Fe(II)/S-nZVI as activated catalysts for TCE removal, with HO center dot and SO4 center dot playing crucial roles in TCE degradation. Additionally, the presence of CA was found to maintain Fe(II) concentration for catalytic activity.

Enhanced trichloroethylene degradation in the presence of surfactant: Pivotal role of Fe(II)/nZVI catalytic synergy in persulfate system

Zhiqiang Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the removal of trichloroethylene (TCE) in solutions involving non-ionic surfactant Tween-80 (TW-80) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) activated by Fe(II) activated persulfate (PS) with nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI). It was found that the addition of nZVI significantly promoted TCE degradation, while the presence of TW-80 or SDS inhibited TCE removal. Furthermore, tests showed that HO• and SO4•- were major contributors to TCE degradation in the PS/Fe(II)/nZVI system.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by bicarbonate and acceleration of the reaction by freezing

Yong-Yoon Ahn et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the positive effects of dissolved bicarbonate and carbonate anions on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) induced oxidation and the remarkable acceleration of the reaction by freezing. The unique reaction between bicarbonate and PMS in frozen conditions and the proposed oxidation mechanisms were highlighted in this research.
