Removal of potentially toxic metal by biochar derived from rendered solid residue with high content of protein and bone tissue

Jong-Hwan Park et al.

Summary: This study produced RACR-C by pyrolyzing pig carcass residues and evaluated their Cd adsorption characteristics. The Cd adsorption capacity of RACR-C is influenced by factors such as initial dosage, pH, and co-existing metals, requiring comprehensive management. Adsorption of Cd by RACR-C involves various mechanisms, including adsorption by functional groups, precipitation of Cd-P, and ion exchange reactions.

Comprehensive assessment of heavy metal pollution and ecological risk in lake sediment by combining total concentration and chemical partitioning

Zhenzhen Yu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the bioavailability, pollution, and eco-risk of heavy metals in surface sediments of Erhai Lake, with results indicating that BCR extraction is more efficient compared to HCl extraction. Cd was found to be the most polluted element, while Cr, Cu, and Ni were mainly natural in origin, and Cd, Pb, and Zn existed in both bioavailable and residue forms. Various assessment indices showed inconsistent eco-risks for different metals, highlighting the importance of integrating multiple indices in metal pollution and eco-risk assessments.

A novel modified method for the efficient removal of Pb and Cd from wastewater by biochar: Enhanced the ion exchange and precipitation capacity

Jiawen Wu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to enhance the sorption ability of Pb and Cd by promoting ion exchange and precipitation capacities of biochar. Modification with magnesium significantly increased the adsorption capacity of Mg-coated biochar for Pb and Cd, dominantly through ion exchange and mineral precipitation mechanisms.

Preparation of biochar and biochar composites and their application in a Fenton-like process for wastewater decontamination: A review

Xuqin Pan et al.

Summary: Biochar is a carbon-rich material obtained from solid waste pyrolysis, featuring low cost, large specific surface area, and strong adsorption capacity. Biochar composites, produced by loading nano particles onto biochar, have been widely applied in wastewater treatment to enhance the performance of advanced oxidation processes. However, due to the variety of biochar feedstocks and preparation methods, comparing the properties of different biochars can be challenging.

Heavy metals accumulation and risk assessment in a soil-maize (Zea mays L.) system around a zinc-smelting area in southwest China

Zhibin Duan et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of heavy metals in the soil of a typical indigenous zinc-smelting area in northwestern Guizhou Province, China, were significantly higher than the background values, especially for cadmium and lead. In maize grain, the heavy metals were mainly in the order of zinc, lead, copper, and cadmium, with cadmium showing a strong ability to accumulate in the maize root. The maize root played an important role in reducing the mobilization of heavy metals to the stem, except for zinc.

Direct Analysis of Soil Composition for Source Apportionment by Laser Ablation Single-Particle Aerosol Mass Spectrometry

Jing Hu et al.

Summary: This study used LA-SPAMS technology to investigate the chemical compositions and source apportionment of surface soil samples collected from five sites in Shanghai, China, revealing significant differences in particle size distribution and chemical compositions among the samples. The results also showed that soil components in different areas have been influenced by local environmental factors, leading to varying characteristics.
