Assessment of water quality in Aguieira reservoir: Ecotoxicological tools in addition to the Water Framework Directive

I. Pinto et al.

Summary: The study assessed the ecological potential of Aguieira reservoir using physical, chemical, and biological parameters, as well as ecotoxicological tools. The reservoir showed moderate EP overall, with autumn samples and two upstream sites having the worst classification. Ecotoxicological assays revealed the sensitivity of different species to water quality, suggesting the need for a more integrated approach in water quality assessment.

Using molecular detection for the diversity and occurrence of cyanobacteria and 2-methylisoborneol-producing cyanobacteria in an eutrophicated reservoir in northern China

Pengfei Qiu et al.

Summary: This study used NGS and qPCR techniques to reveal the diversity and dynamics of cyanobacteria and 2-MIB-producing cyanobacteria in Yuctiao Reservoir in Tianjin, China. NGS identified the cyanobacterial community composition, while qPCR detected the 2-MIB synthesis gene copy number, predicting the increase in 2-MIB concentration through gene copy number. The combination of NGS and qPCR can provide early warning information for reservoir managers and water utilities facing taste and odor incidents.

Verifying the usefulness of macrophytes as an indicator of the status of small waterbodies

Barbara Szpakowska et al.

Summary: The variability of physicochemical parameters in small waterbodies impacts aquatic macrophytes, which are crucial for the classification of reservoirs. However, nutrient-rich small waterbodies in rural areas may present challenges for accurate assessment. Only a canonical analysis considering environmental variables and plant species allows satisfactory results to be obtained.

Assessment of the Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities in the Evaluation of the Water Quality of Portuguese Reservoirs: An Experimental Approach

Ivo Pinto et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the water quality of reservoirs using macroinvertebrates, finding evidence of pollution in the water bodies. Organisms associated with polluted water were found in sites with poor water quality, while those with moderate disturbance tolerance were linked to sites with better water quality. The results suggest that the macroinvertebrate community is sensitive to and capable of characterizing reservoir water quality.

Can biochemical endpoints improve the sensitivity of the biomonitoring strategy using bioassays with standard species, for water quality evaluation?

S. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the role of biochemical parameters in assessing ecological water reservoir quality using bioassays with Daphnia magna as the standard species. It found that biomarkers were more sensitive than bioassays and can therefore improve the sensitivity of the biomonitoring strategy. This work demonstrates the complementary nature of bioassays and biomarkers in identifying ecotoxicological effects in surface waters, particularly in challenging environments such as reservoirs.

Microalgae Growth Inhibition-Based Reservoirs Water Quality Assessment to Identify Ecotoxicological Risks

Sara Rodrigues et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the adaptability of bioassay with Raphidocelis subcapitata as a complement to the water quality assessment parameters of reservoirs under the European Water Framework Directive. The assay proved sensitive, detecting potential disturbances not always captured by chemical analysis. Microalgae assay showed quick response to various water conditions, indicating its effectiveness in assessing ecotoxicological potential. High similarities were found between ecotoxicological and ecological potentials based on the WFD parameters.
