KOH-activated high surface area Douglas Fir biochar for adsorbing aqueous Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II)

Amali Herath et al.

Summary: Through KOH activation, high surface area Douglas fir biochar obtained from commercial syn-gas production shows remarkable enhancement in heavy metal adsorption capacity for Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II). The adsorption process follows pseudo-second order kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption model for all three metals. The desorption study reveals that Pb(II) adsorption onto KOH-activated biochar surface is reversible, while portions of Cd(II) and Cr(VI) adsorbed strongly onto the biochar cannot be desorbed by typical solutions.

Preparation of biochar-interpenetrated iron-alginate hydrogel as a pH-independent sorbent for removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II)

Chenhao Zhao et al.

Summary: A pH-independent interpenetrating polymeric network was fabricated for removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution. The Fe-SA-C exhibited excellent pH buffering capacity and high adsorption performance due to the crosslinking of graphitic biochar and iron-alginate hydrogel. The functionalized, conductive, and positively-charged Fe-SA-C extended its applicability for removal of heavy metals over a wide pH range.

Increased structural defects of graphene oxide compromised reductive capacity of ZVI towards hexavalent chromium

Xianni Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that as the irradiation beam intensity increased, the oxygen content and structural disorder of GO also increased, leading to a decrease in the removal capacity of Cr(VI) by the ZVI material. The reduction capacity of ZVI/GO composites was affected by the structural disorder of GO, with higher doses of irradiation potentially exacerbating carbon structure disorder and inhibiting the reduction of Cr(VI) by ZVI.
