Economic impacts of soil fertility degradation by traces of iron from drinking water treatment

Josef Marousek et al.

Summary: The most common drinking water clarification technology globally uses iron(III) oxide-hydroxide FeO(OH) for precipitation, but the traces of iron in the coagulation sludge have been found to worsen the availability of phosphorus in soil. It is recommended to stop using these composts and revitalize affected fields using biochar activated by calcium and aluminum phosphates to avoid delaying the problem for future generations.

Iron powder activated peroxymonosulfate combined with waste straw to improve sludge dewaterability

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: A new method for improving waste activated sludge dewatering by using iron powder activated peroxomonosulfate combined with waste straw was explored in this study. The results showed that under optimal conditions, dewatering performance was significantly enhanced with reduced water content and specific resistance to filtration.

Effects of alkalinity on interaction between EPS and hydroxy-aluminum with different speciation in wastewater sludge conditioning with aluminum based inorganic polymer flocculant

Weijun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated the effects of alkalinity on sludge conditioning with hydroxy-aluminum, showing that the effectiveness of hydroxy-aluminum conditioning deteriorated with increasing alkalinity, leading to a change in the flocculation mechanism. Polymeric hydroxy-aluminum showed higher binding capacity for proteins and polysaccharides in EPS compared to monomeric aluminum, affecting the secondary structure of proteins and ultimately improving sludge dewaterability.

Enhanced technology based for sewage sludge deep dewatering: A critical review

Bingdi Cao et al.

Summary: Sludge is a byproduct of sewage treatment containing pathogens, heavy metals, organic pollutants and other toxic substances. Chemical preconditioning is crucial for improving sludge dewatering efficiency, and different chemical conditioning technologies have a significant impact on the dewatering process. Research and evaluation of various enhanced dewatering technologies are important for improving dewatering efficiency.

Understanding synergistic mechanisms of ferrous iron activated sulfite oxidation and organic polymer flocculation for enhancing wastewater sludge dewaterability

Jing Ai et al.

Summary: The study utilized Fe(II)-sulfite oxidation and polyacrylamide flocculation (F/S-PAM) treatment to remove the bound water in waste activated sludge and improve sludge dewaterability. The radicals generated by F/S could decompose EPS, releasing bound water, while PAM caused re-flocculation of disintegrated sludge flocs, enhancing sludge filterability.

Pyrite assisted peroxymonosulfate sludge conditioning: Uncover triclosan transformation during treatment

Jialin Liang et al.

Summary: The novel pyrite and peroxymonosulfate treatment proposed in this study improved the dewaterability of Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) and removal efficiency of Triclosan (TCS). By generating sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals, and inducing strong flocculation, the treatment effectively reduced sticky biopolymers in the sludge, benefiting downstream treatment processes.
