On the Flip Side of Mask Wearing: Increased Exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds and a Risk-Reducing Solution

Long Jin et al.

Summary: Surgical masks worn during the COVID-19 pandemic contain hazardous organic compounds that pose potential health risks to wearers, including mutagenic carbonyls and hormone disruptors. There is significant variability in the quality of masks, with higher levels of residue VOCs leading to increased exposure and disease risks. Heating masks at 50 degrees Celsius for 60 minutes can reduce total VOC content by up to 80%, providing a simple method to limit exposure to maskborne VOCs.

Precursors and Pathways Leading to Enhanced Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation during Severe Haze Episodes

Yan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study used molecular analyses to investigate the key precursors and chemical processes of secondary organic aerosol formation in Beijing's winter PM2.5. Results showed that both photochemical and aqueous processing were involved in producing SOA during haze events, with important precursors including aromatics, isoprene, long-chain alkanes or alkenes, and carbonyls such as glyoxal and methylglyoxal. The enhanced SOA formation during severe haze events was mainly attributed to aqueous processing, highlighting the importance of reducing nitrogen oxides for future SOA control. Further research is needed on the formation of highly oxygenated long-chain molecules in polluted urban environments.

Simple strategy for the construction of oxygen vacancies on α-MnO2 catalyst to improve toluene catalytic oxidation

Lingzhu Chen et al.

Summary: A strategy for large-scale production of high-activity alpha-MnO2 catalysts in VOCs oxidation is crucial. By adjusting the precipitation temperature, construction of oxygen vacancies on alpha-MnO2 has been achieved, improving its catalytic activity. The best catalyst, alpha-MnO2-60, showed significantly improved activity despite its lower specific surface area, highlighting the importance of surface oxygen vacancies in catalytic activity. This work offers insights for rational design of efficient VOCs catalysts.

Highly Active PdO/Mn3O4/CeO2 Nanocomposites Supported on One Dimensional Halloysite Nanotubes for Photoassisted Thermal Catalytic Methane Combustion

Xilan Feng et al.

Summary: By triggering the aqueous auto-redox reactions between reductive Ce(OH)(3) and oxidative MnO4-/Pd2+ ions, PdO/Mn3O4/CeO2 (PMC) nanocomposites were formed, showing strong synergistic effects. The HPMC nanocomposites exhibited excellent performance in photoassisted thermal catalytic CH4 combustion, with a reduced light-off temperature of 180 degrees C under visible light irradiation. The catalytic reaction process followed the classic MVK mechanism, with O-2 adsorption/activation into active oxygen species (O*) being the rate-determining step for CH4 conversion.

Unraveling the decisive role of surface CeO2 nanoparticles in the Pt-CeO2/MnO2 hetero-catalysts for boosting toluene oxidation: Synergistic effect of surface decorated and intrinsic O-vacancies

Shengpeng Mo et al.

Summary: Oxygen vacancy engineering plays a vital role in efficient degradation of volatile organic compounds in nanomaterials. The Pt-0.15Ce-Mn catalyst demonstrates superior catalytic activity for toluene oxidation due to more oxygen vacancies, excellent redox ability, and well dispersion of Pt. Introduction of CeO2 NPs induces the generation of more oxygen vacancies and new structure defects, leading to lower formation energy of oxygen vacancy and boosting remarkable catalytic activity for deep toluene oxidation through a synergistic effect of dual oxygen vacancies.

Multigeneration Production of Secondary Organic Aerosol from Toluene Photooxidation

Yixin Li et al.

Summary: Photooxidation of toluene can lead to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and light-absorbing brown carbon (BrC) through a complex series of chemical reactions, involving the production of dicarbonyls and carboxylic functional groups as primary precursors. The study shows that volatile dicarbonyls form nonvolatile oligomers and light-absorbing nitrogen heterocycles/heterochains at high humidity, while organic acids contribute to aerosol carboxylates through ionic dissociation or acid-base reactions over a wide range of humidity levels. These findings highlight the important role of toluene in SOA/BrC formation due to the unique functionalities of dicarbonyls and organic acids in aerosol-phase reactions.
