Molecular Analysis of Secondary Brown Carbon Produced from the Photooxidation of Naphthalene

Kyla Siemens et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical composition of organic light-absorbing components in anthropogenic secondary organic aerosol. The results provide molecular-level insights into their composition and optical properties, revealing the formation and degradation of strongly absorbing nitro-aromatic chromophores under high-NOx conditions. The addition of NOx enhances the light absorption of the aerosol and reduces its wavelength-dependence. The identification of specific molecular chromophores suggests their potential use as markers for BrC related to anthropogenic emissions.

Optical Properties of Secondary Organic Aerosol Produced by Nitrate Radical Oxidation of Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds

Quanfu He et al.

Summary: The nighttime oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) by nitrate radicals leads to the formation of substantial secondary organic aerosol (SOA) containing oxygenated organic nitrates (ONs), which can absorb and scatter solar radiation in the atmosphere. The SOA generated has an atmospheric photochemical bleaching lifetime of >6.2 h, suggesting that some ONs may serve as stable nitrogen oxide sinks in the atmosphere.

Chemical Composition and Molecular-Specific Optical Properties of Atmospheric Brown Carbon Associated with Biomass Burning

Anusha Priyadarshani Silva Hettiyadura et al.

Summary: This study provides molecular insights into the light absorption properties of biomass burning brown carbon, revealing different chromophores in BrC samples. The results suggest that gas-phase partitioning influences the optical properties of BrC, leading to an increase in the mass absorption coefficient of aerosolized PO.
