Time-dependent molecular progression and acute toxicity of oil-soluble, interfacially-active, and water-soluble species reveals their rapid formation in the photodegradation of Macondo Well Oil

Huan Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular transformations of Macondo Well Oil under photoinduced pathways using negative-ion electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. The results show that photochemical oxidation occurs within the first hour and the composition of photoproducts remains similar after 24 hours of irradiation. Additionally, the toxicity of water-soluble photoproducts rapidly increases at early irradiation time points.

A Comparative Analysis of Analytical Techniques for Rapid Oil Spill Identification

Alina T. Roman-Hubers et al.

Summary: This study examined the potential of IMS-MS as a high-throughput method for the chemical characterization of crude oils, finding it to be either equal or better than GC-MS in classifying the origins of crude oils and greatly increasing sample analysis throughput. The study demonstrated the utility of IMS-MS for rapid fingerprinting of complex samples and showed its advantages over traditional GC-MS-based analyses in emergency decision-making situations.

Data Processing Workflow to Identify Structurally Related Compounds in Petroleum Substances Using Ion Mobility Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry

Alina T. Roman-Hubers et al.

Summary: Ion mobility spectrometry coupled with mass spectrometry (IMS-MS) is used for rapid multidimensional analyses of complex samples, providing untargeted analysis and ion-specific conformational data. By combining nitrogen gas drift tube CCS and Kendrick mass defect analyses, confident compositional characterization of hydrocarbon-containing substances can be achieved. The workflow proposed in this study allows for molecular formula assignment and confident compositional characterization of petroleum samples.
