Octanol-water partition coefficient (logKow) dependent movement and time lagging of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from emission sources to lake sediments: A case study of Taihu Lake, China

Weiwei Wang et al.

Summary: The movement and time lag of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Taihu Lake sediments from emission sources are dependent on their logK(ow) values, with low logK(ow) PAHs showing no lag and high logK(ow) PAHs demonstrating longer lag times due to retardation in soils and river sediments. PAHs concentration in sediments is influenced by their environmental behaviors, including sorption and degradation, indicating the importance of understanding PAHs behavior in controlling pollution.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface waters from the seven main river basins of China: Spatial distribution, source apportionment, and potential risk assessment

Haiyan Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, long-term measurements of PAHs in surface waters of seven river basins across China were reported. The pollution level of PAHs was higher in North China than in South China, with coal and biomass combustion identified as the main contributors. Some individual PAH concentrations exceeded environmental quality standards, and certain river basins were found to be at moderate or high risk of contamination.

Concentrations, distribution and risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments from seven major river basins in China over the past 20 years

Minna Zhang et al.

Summary: A systematic meta-analysis was conducted on the concentration, risk, and spatiotemporal variation of PAHs in river sediments from the seven major river systems in China based on data from 1997-2020. Higher concentrations of sediment PAHs were found in the basins of Liaohe River and Haihe River, primarily from coal and fossil fuel combustion. While there was no downward trend in PAH concentrations in sediment over the past 20 years, the contribution of high-temperature combustion to pollution has declined.

Spatiotemporal distribution of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emissions during 2013-2017 in mainland China

Teng Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that the total emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mainland China have decreased from 2013 to 2017, mainly coming from industrial, residential/commercial, and transportation sectors. The magnitude and reasons for the decline in PAH emissions vary in different regions, with particular attention needed for the limited decline in Northwest China.
