Highly Active and Selective Electroreduction of N2 by the Catalysis of Ga Single Atoms Stabilized on Amorphous TiO2 Nanofibers

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: The electroreduction of N-2 under ambient conditions is a promising technology to produce NH3 in a more environmentally friendly way. However, the low yield and efficiency of NH3 production have been challenging due to the lack of highly active and selective catalysts. This study proposes a strategy to address the activity and selectivity challenge by dispersing p-block metal atoms on an all-amorphous transition-metal matrix.

Ammonia harvesting via membrane gas extraction at moderately alkaline pH: A step toward net-profitable nitrogen recovery from domestic wastewater

Wooram Lee et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of recovering high-purity ammonia from waste streams using membrane gas extraction technique, and suggests that operating at a moderately alkaline feed pH can be more advantageous than the current biological nitrogen removal method in domestic wastewater treatment. The study also shows that applying a lower feed pH can prevent membrane fouling and minimize the consumption of alkaline agents, thus offering the opportunity for the recovered ammonia to exceed the cost of base consumed. The research substantially extends current understanding of the membrane gas extraction technique for ammonia recovery, highlighting its potential to improve the sustainability of the global nitrogen cycle.

Ammonia removal through combined methane oxidation and nitrification-denitrification and the interactions among functional microorganisms

Qin Cao et al.

Summary: The study explored the utilization of methane produced by anaerobic digestion as a carbon source for nitrogenous contaminant removal in wastewater treatment. The results indicated that coupling methane oxidation with nitrate/nitrite denitrification was beneficial in achieving higher ammonia removal rates. Analysis of microbial communities revealed the presence of methanotrophs and heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacteria in the system.

Improved anaerobic digestion of swine manure by simultaneous ammonia recovery using gas-permeable membranes

I. Gonzalez-Garcia et al.

Summary: Removal of NH3 using gas-permeable membrane (GPM) technology can improve AD process performance and biogas production. The reductions in TAN and FA levels by GPM system positively impact both the quality and quantity of the biogas produced by AD of swine manure. Additionally, ammonia nitrogen recovery in the form of ammonium sulphate further enhances the benefits of the AD-GPM configuration.
