Light-driven carbon dioxide reduction to methane by Methanosarcina barkeri in an electric syntrophic coculture

Lingyan Huang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that Rhodopseudomonas palustris can act as a natural photosensitizer, driving CO2 to CH4 conversion in coculture with Methanosarcina barkeri under illumination. This offers a new way to harvest solar energy and potentially replace semiconductors in biohybrid systems.

Bioelectrochemical Fixation of Nitrogen to Extracellular Ammonium by Pseudomonas stutzeri

Shanshan Chen et al.

Summary: Diazotrophs have the ability to produce bioavailable nitrogen through extracellular electron transfer, presenting a promising strategy for improving nitrogen fertilization in natural environments. Pseudomonas stutzeri A1501 can excrete NH4+ without the need for chemical suppression or genetic manipulation, highlighting its potential impact on nitrogen-fixing processes in microbial communities.

Acetogenic bacteria utilize light-driven electrons as an energy source for autotrophic growth

Sangrak Jin et al.

Summary: A hybrid system has been developed that can convert CO2 into acetate using light-induced electrons without the need for additional energy sources. Genes encoding metal ion or flavin-binding proteins were up-regulated under CdS-driven autotrophic conditions, along with activation of genes related to the WL pathway and energy conservation system, increasing the CO2 fixation rate under light exposure. The results demonstrate the potential to improve the efficiency of artificial photosynthesis systems based on acetogenic bacteria integrated with photoresponsive nanoparticles.

Photooxidation mechanism of As(III) by straw-derived dissolved organic matter

Shaochong Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photooxidation of As(III) in aqueous solution by straw-derived dissolved organic matter (S-DOM). The results showed that DOM derived from wheat straw and rape straw could efficiently oxidize As(III) under irradiation, with hydroxyl radical as the dominant oxidant. The oxidation efficiency of As(III) was inhibited in the presence of NO3- while enhanced in the presence of Fe(III).

Photochemical Behavior of Microbial Extracellular Polymeric Substances in the Aquatic Environment

Shaofeng Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the photochemical characteristics of EPS from different microbial sources, revealing that the diversity of EPS composition led to variations in the steady-state concentrations of reactive species. Protein-like components in EPS were found to undergo degradation under light exposure, while humic-like components remained stable. The phototransformation of EPS facilitated the degradation of antibiotic tetracycline.
